Has any one installed another set of d-rings in the front of the bed using the front bed mount bolts with any luck? The side rail tie down points seem kind of flimsy to me. It looks like it should be a matter of unscrewing the front bolts and putting another d-ring onto the bolt and screwing it back in. Any good or bad points to doing this?

    Search. This has been done.

    A few points:

    - The side rails are *not* flimsy.

    - Fitment of d-rings on the bed bolt will be tricky. Drilling out mounting holes in the d-rings with a uni-bit may be necessary. It is also common to have to grind some metal ribs off the bed bolt so that the washer may be removed.

    - You will likely need an impact driver/wrench or LONG (2 feet plus) cheater bar to break loose the bed bolts. I don't know the exact torque spec, but it's somewhere just past "torqued to all hell".

    - Recommend a nice thick coat of rustoleum after drilling/grinding to prevent rust.

you need to use a t-55 torx bit with a rachet to remove the front bolts. then use either a bench grinder or a dremel to grind the top threads from the bolt removed to get the washer off. put d-ring on then the washer for more support and re-install. just did them in my truck this weekend make sure you use red locktite btw.

what about putting D-rings on the front wall, or back wall. Or whatever you want to call it. The end that's against the cabin.

I have one of those "spider" nets for my bed. I sometimes haul with a tarp and the tarp will flap around that area if it's not held down.

Thanks for the replies. I searched for d-rings with no luck. I am hauling 2 bikes and occasionally my 4 wheeler. I know the rail clips are rated for only 200# and my VTX weighs about 600#. I haven't had that bike in there yet, but I don't want that thing coming loose and taking anything out. The main reason for the bed bolt mounting spot is that it has a nice metal bracket underneath the truck so it should be as strong as the rear factory d-ring location. I would be leary of just mounting an extra one just anywhere because you are mounting it to just the plastic bed.

Saw this and I am currently putting extra d-rings in my bed for tie downs. 2 are going just under the original track for the OEM tie down above the wheel wells. And then i am going to mount the other 2 behind the wheel well on the bottom of the bed. Just finished painting them and making a back mounting bracket. I got the tie downs from Lowes, Daddy's toy store as my kids call it. They came in a pack of four for like $5.00. Installing them this weekend on Saturday. I'll post pics when I do them and figure out how to post them.

Okay just out of curiosity I ran outside and tried to break loose the front bolts and they both came loose with basically no effort at all. I guess they aren't torqued very tight from the factory. I am going to order up some rings today and I should be all set. Thanks again!

yes I totally forgot that there were no front d rings on my truck when I went to pick up my new (to me) motorcycle. Needless to say I drove home and got my trailer which has mounting points into the metal, not just the wood & picked up a wheel chock. Now the trailer is setup for my bike!
Racheting a bike, sled or atv to the rail isn't something I would do either & would be leery of mounting points just in the bottom or sides of the plastic bed. I am going to have to arrange to get d rings added to the front bed bolts too. Thanks for all the links & posts.

The rail cleats are rated for up to 220# pull force. An ATV sitting in the pickup bed and shifting with a turn is applying maybe 100# pull force to an actual cleat in the worst case scenario, most of the time much much less.

I wouldn't hesitate to strap anything up to max payload down with the rail cleats. Toyota kind of designed them that way...

That said, I have extra d-rings in just because 10 tie-down locations is better than 6...especially for smaller items.

They're in a spot that's exposed to the weather so they get rusty pretty quick. On mine they took a bit of muscle to break loose and remained stiff while unscrewing them. I even squirted some PB Blaster (penetrating oil) on them because I did not want to break one of those.

As far as the washer went, I just ground down one edge to fit the D-ring rather than remove it.
