Speedometer Question

    I am getting ready to upgrade tires on my '09 Taco. I have the stock 215 70 15 tires and am thinking about going to some 225 75 15 tires. I was curious about the effects of going to a taller tire on the speedo. A chart I checked showed that at a 65mph reading the actual speed would be 68.8. Just for grins I checked my speedo with a GPS app and at 50mph reading I was going 48 according to the GPS. My thinking is with my speedo reading slow once the larger tires are on will the reading be close to the actual speed or am I going in the wrong direction?

    You are correct.

    235 is the largest tire your 5 lug will take on OE wheels and no mods to body or suspension. No fuss no muss, no rubbing. It will have your speedo off about 2 mph the other way.

    Maybe I need to rephrase my question. If at actual 48mph with a 50mph indicated with stock tires, will my reading go to 50 with taller tires or will it go back to 46? If it goes backwards a reading of 60 at actual 67 might be an issue.

    If you install taller tires , it takes more time for the tire to turn one revolution in comparison to smaller factory wheel . This makes your factory speedometer read slower than you are actually moving .
    The Hypertech speedometer calibrator may be an option if you are worried about speeding tickets

    The only review on the link showed it worked with a '16 Taco. My '09 has a needle speedo, not digital.

    Hey Rick . I believe your instrument cluster is digital even though you have a needle and your speedometer is still considered digital .
    If you are completely analog with a mechanical speedometer , reducing the amount of teeth on the driven speedometer gear will show a faster reading . The links I posted above the Hypertech calibrator will show you what can be done

    Thanks for the info. I am an old geezer and I don't see me tearing apart the dash or changing gears in the tranny. I do appreciate the information. I might just do some road tests and put some pin stripes on the dash at speeds like 50, 65 and 70 as read on the GPS.

    I had some Nexen Roadian WOL 235 70r 15's installed today. Test drive home I checked the speedo and the GPS matched too close to tell a diff. These are about an 1.25" taller than the OEM weenie tires. They ride great and really make the truck look better. Me happy.

    Proper lil truck. Such a shame they killed off the 5 lugger. For those that wanted good mpgs, and a low truck bed it was the best ticket out there!

    It is still amazing how much bigger it is than the first Toyota pickups. Just guessing the Gen II might be about the same size as the T100's. I thought the first gen Tundras were very nice.
