Hey guys, im looking for more power in my Taco. Shes my daily so i cant afford to have her in the garage for more than about 2 weeks at the most. I'm reviewing my options and the turbo kit from CX seems like a great place to start. Do you think i should buy a decent 5vz and rebuild it and do the parts install with the engine outside the truck and drop it in? Or do you think that would just cause unnecessary issues. My only concern it wiring as from what i can tell everything is pretty straight forward. My end goal is ~250-300 whp. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Magnuson TRD Supercharger is easier and faster to add. Takes one two hours to install at most.

hes wanting to do a full engine swap. adding boost will be a lesser time consuming part.

op you know your stock 2rz can handle the power you want well boosted?

ive got the 5vz, im basically asking if id run into trouble if i turbod the engine outside the truck and dropped it in. that would aslo give me time to figure out a standalone for it

    All this on your dd?

Leave the engine in - taking it out will eat up all your time to build a turbo system. That said here's some stuff:

Well by the time its finished ill have a more economical car to get to and from work, my taco will be my fun car. All im trying to avoid is months of downtime on the truck while i get the engine prepped.

    Heard that story before :anonymous:

How many miles on your engine and how much boost are you planning on giving it?

looking for 10-15 psi, its 230xxx with a rebuild in my current one. the new one will be 120xxx from a wrecked taco, figured ill just rebuild it and go boost her. I got a sweet deal for it, only 150 :D

Supercharger is going to be the fastest, and most reliable imho. BUT Wont be so above 10ish psi. looses efficiency.

Turbo is fun, but alot more pieces to go together. Especially in a two week period if you are asking these sort of questions.

Best bet, get the new daily first.

You're all making completely valid points, ill give you that. Ive already got my daily, its a little 92 Tercel 4 speed ive been fixing up. I just really want to build up a 5vz. LCE has some 8:5:1 pistons, i was going to swap those along with a 3vzfe forged crank and bolt on a turbo to the thing and call it a day. I feel like it will be a reliable build but my questions is; Can i simply drop in my built turbo engine once i get it tuned? Ive got the money to do this, just not much time everyday. This would be a slow steady build i just like driving my truck more than my tercel. That's the only reason i want to avoid the downtime with my truck.

Lol your story is sounding more legit as it goes. At first it was a guy who wants to pull his engine on his daily and turbo it in 2 weeks which was presumably his 2 weeks of vacation time for a year.

I'm still a little unclear on the details. So you have a replacement engine already and you want to turbo it? Sure pull your old motor and turbo the new one as much as possible before you drop it in. Of course some things are going to be better fitted when it's in there, but you could leave it loosely bolted in to move it in and out of the truck as needed.

    Now reading this whole thread!!

The idea is to build an extra engine to handle boost from the get go.

Depending on your fabrication and mechanical skills is two weeks enough time to have this swap up and running .

Working all by yourself ?? Having help you have worked with before on such projects and things were smooth.

Helpers that make the 3 Stooges look like a Nascar Pitcrew !!

Depending if you go Turbo Charger just the exhaust Plumbing one can have the engine in and out 10 or more times.

If the truck needs to be street legal with Emissions sometimes just clearing all the codes fixing the problems can be time consuming .

Then add the pressure of it needs to be done in 2 weeks !!
