You can also use 2014 4Runner brakes (14wa) if you run 17” rims it’s bigger thang the gx470 upgrade

From what I have found this is what I was talking about. It is going based on the older stuff and probably cheaper than the 2014 T4R brakes. So is the T4R rotors and calipers larger than these? I haven't seen or heard of that upgrade. I know I would like to convert the rear to discs at some point as well.

The gx ones(13wh) can be used with 16” rims iirc there slightly larger and thicker, but the (14wh) is even bigger aka need minimum 17” rims.

I want to do the 14wa and have seen then at part stores for ~$85 a caliper + core

Per the thread I posted the wh may have to use 17in wheels as well since the T4Rs and the GX were running 17s. But he doesn't know if some 16in and other 17s will fit. I am running 17in methods so I should be good. I am going to look into the one you suggested.

The one thing I don't want to do is end up with to much caliper piston and have to upgrade the master. I know when I switch to discs in the rear the proportioning valve will have to be changed. I have done a bunch of brake upgrades in the past on other peoples stuff as well as my own and it can be a slippery slope once you upgrade one thing you don't get full potential or any benefit because other parts of the system aren't sized appropriately.

It looks like the 14wa and the 13wh both use the same diameter rotors at 338mm but the 14wa runs a little thicker @ 31.8mm vs. 28mm and the calipers have 2mm over sized pistons. That makes me think the pads friction surface is slightly larger. It would be nice to know the pad size though as compared to the 13wh's though.

It seems the 14wa is slightly a better upgrade without going over bored for the stock master cylinder. I wonder if the 5th gen T4R master has a larger bore and would bolt up??? It is really nice to do upgrades with factory components compared to aftermarket so much easier to get parts when they fail.

    Thanks for the link!

I can see what ya mean by slippery slope, I started looking at al this when I realized that I’ve got a wrapped rotor :frusty:
I’ve combated it for now with friends take off parts but considering my trucks an 06 it’s proably due for a good refresh anyway.

The tundras and sequoias have a factory brake upgrade that goes to a larger diameter and thicker rotor to combat warping issues. I want to say it was the 1st gen tundras and up to maybe an 06 sequoia IIRC.

I messaged him about being the guinea pig and lets just say it isn't how the automotive world works for being a test bed. I wonder if there is a factory master cyl. that has a larger bore/piston and will bolt right up, again ease of getting repair parts.

Got some cheap rock lights on Cyber Monday decided to get them installed today since it was so nice. Started documenting the install on my build thread but here's a money shot ;)
