It's definitely possible, clean up your connections and make sure everything is connected correctly. Do you have an ultragauge or scangauge? If not, check your battery voltage with the truck running, you should have between 13-14.4 ish volts at the battery.

My 98 had a problem that surfaced a couple times, most of the time it was wet weather but a few times it was during dry weather but always in a turn. I though I hit something the first time it happened. I was in the middle of Texas somewhere and turning left and I hear a loud metallic pop/clang sound. Immediately I pull over an scan the underside of the truck and see nothing wrong. drive forward nothing grinding nothing out of the ordinary. Then it happened during a wet rainy day and did the same thing but this time I noticed the 4x4 light faintly come on and off. Like it was trying to shift into 4x4 uncommanded. It popped maybe 3-4 times in the next year but I could never duplicate it for Toyota so I just kept driving it. It never did break on me. Now looking back I think it was something to do with the 4x4 solenoid engaging either by water or dirt. :notsure:

That’s possible! It felt exactly like that but no noise just a bang. Like it binded on something. Can anyone point me I. The direction of the transmission fill point n the over flow point if there not the same. I don’t have any leaks but i def should check the fluid. Is there an internal trans filer that sits in the pan.
Do you guys only use toyota’s ATF fluid or is there something cheaper that’s okay to run. I will be selling this truck soon I really hope I don’t need to rebuild this trans too, just got done with my 47re

If something BROKE loose in the drive train it would be clunk/thump all the time until it gets fixed. I highly doubt the drive shaft is breaking off.

The big clue to me is the dash lights/truck "acting like they were shutting off". Check the battery connections, ground connections, alternator performance (loaded with lights, fan blower, etc turned on). Also the ignition switch could behave like this too when the contacts inside it start to get fried.

also could just be a engine backfire which would also sound bad if it all shut off then came back on.

Thanks I’m on the same think as you! Would this add to a clue for this problem for you. Also for the past few months it’s been taking a couple more turns to start from normal(nothing major literally 2 more turns) and when it’s starts it revs up normal drops real low them comes back to normal idle 900-800. But his last month my idle has dropped to 500rpms every other day, u can’t even tell the tuck is running. This may not be connected just figure I’d share cause I read something about the tps sensor causing trans issues. Is this true does this help at all?

Yes but the electrical power came and went suddenly. An engine misfire isn't going to get the gauges to drop

This was def not an engine back does def sknthjng with the transmission not only could I hear it I felt it under my seat. I am a diesel Machanic so I do have an idea of where this is coming from n I’m almost positive it’s from the trans just gota find out what made it do that.

Check the alternator health, battery connections ( meaning all connections like starter positive, alternator terminal, etc)

prob not on a misfire but if the guages went out completely it would be a symptom of other problems not the cause. if that makes sense.

Have the plugs ever been done? They're supposed to be done every 30k miles. Also clean the throttle body and MAF sensor.

Better hope it's not the ignition, they are crazy expensive to replace, stupid immobilizer system.

He would only need the electrical portion. Aren't they serviceable separately?

I'm thinking the whole thing has to be replaced as an assembly and reprogrammed, but I'm not sure. :notsure:

    I ch
I change the plugs about 30k ago truck has 80k miles. I didn’t change the coil packs tho dose that need to be changed?

I will take a look at the throttle body and sensors. I guess this isn’t a common problem or one that u guys have heard of before. It has me for a loss also. I’m hoping it was because my negative terminal disconnected. N maybe my alternator isn’t charging enough. I wil attempt to get home soon and test all these thjngs. Wish me luck n I will report back
    Thanks
