Yet another backup camera mod thread

Hey, I promise I searched first for an answer or an appropriate thread to piggyback this onto, but got a question for the techies here:

Can anyone work out a way to convert the backup camera input wires to a standard RCA jack?

Basically, what I'd love to be able to do is install a backup anytime button a-la Hoangde's excellent HAI assembly, but install an RCA switcher in-line so that once I'm looking at the backup camera I can toggle to other inputs/cameras.

So, again, what I'd love to be able to do is take the backup camera output wires, splice them into an RCA jack, then take the RCA splitter output and feed that into the HU backup camera input. Feel like this must be *possible*, but I'm also completely ignorant regarding electrical engineering.

Thoughts from the brain-trust?

 

So you need to understand that there is a 28 pin connector and 24 pin connector.

(From memory) HAI cable uses the 28 pin connector and gives access to the 'Aux input, not the rear camera input. The aux input is available by menu item on the Head Unit.

The backup camera input is in the 24 pin connector. The backup camera comes on (and overrides) all other screens when the truck is in reverse or the anytime backup mod is done.

If you JUST want access to the backup camera signal by rca, I think this cable is the easiest.

(But you will probably want to set up a backup anytime circuit using the 28 pin harness.)

 

Ok. Solid information, thank you! I understand and agree that I will want to additionally apply the 28 pin backup anytime mod, but help me understand what I’m looking at on that eBay item. I see 4 terminals with ghosted wires, so I don’t know what plug ends in what plug. Will that adapter ‘interrupt’ the signal? So that I can place a switcher in-line?

 

Can’t remember who’s diagram this is from but it shows where to connect an aux input.

 

I appreciate that diagram, but my goal here is to avoid the AV input, and to run everything in-line with the backup cam circuit so that I can access it by mechanical switch

 

Yes, per my memory it interrupts the camera signal. Don't remember which is male rca and which is female. Looks like this.

I combined the following harnesses and a the following hidden switch, a bosch syle relay to create the system (I think you describe) and a few RCA male/female bits.

Operation:

1. Push main activation switch (back up anytime mod) to turn on backup camera
2. Touch hidden switch to toggle front camera (or any other vid source)

Wow. That’s super slick. Yes, functionally that is exactly what I’m looking for, though I’d never imagined that touchless switch business. Is it finicky at all? How do the relays wire into the system? Could it be expanded to more inputs?

 

Well as mentioned you have to use the combination of harnesses and parts.
The relay (one required) is used to switch between the front and rear camera (the shield - are tied together and the v+ (center) are placed on the 87 terminals (87a rear and 87 front). The hidden touch switched is used to activate the relay (85 or 86), I beleive it supplies 12v when activated so 85 or 86 on the relay goes to ground.
The 28 pin harness is wired to the main anytime on switch so when activated it provides 12v to the head unit reverse camera circuit (remember you have to install a diode to block 12v+ signal from activating your reverse lights).

I imagine you can incorporate additional relays and switches to add other inputs. Remember this is vid only on the reverse circuit.

If you require audio and vid, I beleive you would have to mod the 28 pin harness and use the aux in on the head unit. This is what I beleive the HAI harness mentioned by @BigWhiteTRD allows.

At page 1, utilized rear input camera as a share point between front and rear camera signals.
At post 65, utilized a/v screen as a video signal input such as camera, mirroring, media player ...etc.

If you wanted to setup easier way, split signal (meaning Y split) at pin 12 of 24 pin cable for rear signal to rca connector and front cam video signal split (Y split) to rca connector.
From there both front and rear video signal can go to vcr/avr.

 

It’s funny. I read through this thread months ago, but I didn’t understand the schematic and so when I read your thread about the harnesses for sale I thought they gave the same functionality as this schematic did.

I posted in the audio/video forum, but my assumption is that it doesn't get as much relevant traffic as the 3rd gen forum. Sorry to glom onto your thread OP, but instead of startign a new one, I thought I'd add onto this one (or at least the most recent backup camera mod thread on 3rd gen).

Would someone mind reviewing my wiring diagram for errors? My goal is to turn on (and power if necessary) a front or rear camera with a single DPDT switch. I also added in the nav override, because why not.

Note I purchased both harnesses from anytimebackupcamera.com, so for the sake of this diagram, assume they are essentially black boxes to connect stuff through (the relay was also part of that kit... it's a source selector relay).

 

I don't see anything wrong. Note, I BELIEVE that those harnesses provides power from pin1. That is what I used to power my relay and front camera, but some believe it is a bad idea.

Here is my suggested schematic to do that, but I didn't use hardware from backup anytime, so I can't guarantee.

 

I think your switch diagram is similar to what anytime backup has on their website.

You haven't run into any issues?

 

Sorry, that isn't my configuration so I can't say. (I did a homegrown harness, using a dpdt relay and spdt switch so I could fit it into a tight space). I drew that schematic up to help someone else. I think it's right, but don't guarantee.
