diff fluid change questions

Hey everyone,
Im gonna do my front rear and transfer case fluids on my 2015 TRD sport asap and just wanna make sure i have everything I need.

do I need LS Diff additiive in my rear diff?

rear:
24mm socket, drain and fill torqued to 36 ft/lbs
3 quarts

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 gear oil
4 oz LSD additive?

Front:
10mm Hex socket, fill torqued to 29 ft/lbs drain to 48 ft/lbs
1.6 quarts 75w90
hand pump

Transfer case:
24 mm socket, fill and drain torqued to 27 ft/lbs? seems low
1.1 quarts 75w90

I got all of this info from a previous thread, just want to make sure nothing has changed on the 15' and if I need the LSD additive in the rear. Thanks in advance.

 

You wont need any LSD additive, 09 and up they switched to brake actuated limited slip

You probably already looked at one or both of these writeups, either way your original post seems to be spot on. Its always a good idea to make sure the fill plug comes out before opening the drain plug.

 

Just did mine for the second time last weekend.
Transfer has aluminum gaskets - perhaps the reason for 27.
Get new gaskets for the 3 drain plugs - torque them before re-filling - cheap insurance against leaks.

 

One thing I forgot to do that I will do next time is taking it for a drive before replacing the fluids and also use the 4x4 too.

OP. Thanks for the info. Pics would have been sweet too, of the bolt locations. The other threads dont show pics on my PC. Jut a thought , for other members...

 

Your first link seems to point back to this thread. Ive tried to search the front diff and transfer case myself but can't seem to find the one you are talking about. Thanks!!

 

I did this one on my own a couple of years ago ( front/rear diffs, not transfer case). Wouldn't do it again simply due to the nasty smell of that diff oil. It lingered in my garage for months, it seemed like.

Maybe you don't want to do this, but I don't bother removing the front diff drain plug anymore (I hate those ridiculous 10mm Allens, always get rounded a bit). Those Allens have caused a lot of cursing over the years. I use a transfer pump to get the old oil out via the fill plug, you'll be able to get the hose to the bottom of the diff and get the old oil out. IIRC, the front diff drain plug is non-magnetic so there's nothing to clean off of it.

You can replace the front diff fill plug with a 24mm hex from the transfer case, same length, same thread pitch. About $3 from the dealer.

The 24mm's I use a 6-point socket, and put Amsoil 100k mile Severe gear oil in. Of course, fill plugs out first. Have fun and enjoy the stench!

 

Hey guys, changing my rear diff. I forgot my third bottle of 75-90. Will it be okay til I get to the parts store?

 

Yikes, you'd only be running on 2/3 capacity, which is pretty low IMO. I wouldn't risk it, personally. Could always drain new stuff out, put old stuff back in, drive to parts store, and then do some more swapping to get all new fluid in.

 

How far away is the parts store?

 

everything went smooth today with the fluid change. I was only able to get about 2.7 its into the rear then it started to overflow. I closed the plug up and went and did the transfer case and the front diff to see if the fluid would disperse into the axle a little more, but when I cracked it open about 20 min later it was still flowing out so I figured thats all it wants. Thanks for all the advice with everything! I'm gonna do the manual transmission fluid next. I hear Redline MT-90 is the way to go.
