    Gearcruncher, First, thanks for the very helpful thread and useful info!! Next... I'm thinking of going with the Tru Cool LPD 4589 and no fan because of size and the 24K btu benefit. I don't crawl or climb slowly much with a load but will be doing a lot of "getting there fast" driving while towing. I can always add a fan later if needed.

    My question is with the LPD (Low Pressure Drop) or "bypass" built into the Tru Cool plate and fin coolers, does it matter how you mount them? Do the inlet and outlet fittings need to be up? Can they be mounted to the side? I've got a call in to Dana/Spicer/Victor/Glaser...etc. But I thought you would know.

    Please advise. Thanks!

    I threw in the 4590 (28k model). Large, but was able to fit it. Made HUGE difference in my temps towing, and I run through the ADK's on long hauls. My fittings were on the bottom. I'm pretty sure with the Tru Cool you can mount them in any direction. Mine are both down and have been for almost a year. All is working fine.

    Cool! I finally did talk to the Tru-Cool guys and they confirmed your suspicions. Any direction is A-ok. I’m mounting mine to the side. I finally finished the bracket and test fit everything. Should have everything finished in a couple days. Your cooler is HUGE! Super low temps for you I’m sure.:bowdown:

    Man you have all kinds of room! Just dump the old small cooler, move the horns, get the giant snake tube stuffed or tied forward and you should have plenty of space for the 24K gvw Tru Cool! I’ll post pics of mine when I’m done. My winch controller box sticks up way high on the left side so I can sympathize with what you’re thinking but if you strip everything down and move it out of the way....you can do it.

    Yeah, I run in the 160's IIRC. Barely touched 200 in the ADK's fully loaded with kayaks/bikes on top & 4k+ behind me. I also stay low temps when plowing. Thought about pulling the factory cooler, but so far just gonna leave it. I don't think 160's is too low, but mileage may take a small hit in a DD. If mileage were a concern I wouldn't be running 285's and a lift .

    So would i need to do a fluid flush at the same time? I actually did one already, 24k miles ago. Id imagine doing it too often might be bad

    Giant snake tube is for the supercharger.

    I’m of the opinion that if you’re opening up your tranny system for any reason why not clean it out and give it new fresh fluid? Especially before adding the cooler so if it’s already been hot it’s likely breaking down.

    Hey @gearcruncher, I’ve got 2 questions from an off-roading perspective:

    1) what’s your opinion on installing a fan on trans coolers?

    2) should I keep or remove the little OEM cooler that came with my tow package when adding an after market cooler?

    Yesterday I spent about 2 hours crawling up a very rough 4WD trail (3,300ft ascent); and near the end my A/T overtemp light came on twice. The first time, I stopped, revved the engine a little in park (1500rpms), and the light went out pretty quick. After the second time, we arrived to our destination it cooled down during a 1/2 hr lunch break. I’m thinking about replacing my factory cooler with a LPD4454 Tru-Cool.

    I know you’re 2nd gen but with my 1st gen I plumbed them in series. Ours is in the radiator as a dual core.

    Route is trans-> radiator-> cooler

    As for brand True Cool, B&M are popular. Any major brand should be good.

    Go as big as you can. 1st gens have space constraints. My temps got kind of high before I added an additional cooler. Temps are way better with two coolers for me.
