Dakar Add-A-Leaf Installation?

Looked but couldn't find a thread on installing the OME add-a-leaf on my Dakar leaf pack. Just trying to see the job before I do it.

Ah cool. Saw it at the end of your thread. So the leaf pack comes out and needs to be disassembled, new Add-A-Leaf goes in, and then reassembled and re-installed.

Did you notice the ride being a lot stiffer on the rear afterwards? Does it yield the roughly 15mm of additional lift as stated?

Wasn't my thread I've just read so much on suspension work I remember coming across it.

The ride will probably be a little stiffer especially if you're bed is empty. I want to say it may lift it more than what the add a leaf calls for but I'm not positive on that...When I finish my rear end I will be going the same route, add a leaf with extended length Fox's with resis

 

I hear ya. After shimming my front OME with 886, I'm dangerously close to having bro lean. If I add a rear plate bumper, which I want to do soon, I'll need those AAL's.

 

Just to correct in case people use this as a reference.

If your leaf pack is already installed and you only want to add (or remove) a leaf it doesn't have to come off the truck completely.

Just undo the axle ubolts and lower shock mounts, take out the center pin and you can add/remove leaves

 

Doing this on my Dakar medium pack, the AAL has 3 holes and I'm not sure how it goes in. Looks like it would go between the top spring and the second. Anyone that has done this the help would be appreciated.

 

Holes at ends are for isolators, hole in middle for retaining bolt.
You'll want to slide it in so you got a longer one on top and a shorter one below

Did you have to buy Longer U-bolts or did the ones that come with the Dakar mediums work?

 

No need for different U-bolts

 

how much did adding the HD leaf change the ride and how much lift did you get out of it? Thanks for any info.

I was sagging with the Medium pack got about 400lbs extra out back, when I changed my front springs to 700lb ones I had the bro lean. front was about 1/2" higher than the back. With the AAL in I was back to about an inch higher in the back. The ride is still good no noticeable difference.

 

Thanks. Getting mine in this week. Dual swing out rear high clearance plus drawers and tools has been making my rear end sag a bit. Been lagging on getting this done

 

I am about to do this mod... do you guys have any tips? I plan on leaving the leaf springs mounted to the truck

 

Just did the AAL install last week.
Took the packs off the truck to make it easier to work with. Glad I did it that way.

Ride felt a little soggy over bumps before, this definitely tightened things up a bit after. I really like the ride and height now.
Going to check DS angles once it settles a bit. Have some take off shutter, but nothing terrible.

for reference:
** I am riding with an ARE shell on the bed as well. A modified leaf pack with the top OL leaf removed and squeak pucks installed on the leafs.
** In the front are 6112s set at the 4th notch. 2nd gen Tacoma.

 

Do you know if the OME AAL comes with the friction pads. If not, do you need them or can it be installed on its own?
