Is the manual transmission that much better than the auto transmission?

In my eyes a Manuel is more fun to drive whether it’s a truck or a car to shift through the gears then a auto . I have both and I love my auto just as much a my 5spd .

Late to the party !! May have been all said again this thread .
I have had a dozen more or less manuals and 3 times that in autos in the last 45 years . Yeah , I am an irrelevant old buck . Used to be the best mileage and 1/4 mile times came from manuals . Sad to say ,it is no longer . AI and computers know much better .
Manuals are for enjoying the mastering of a skill for the track , or off road driving , all for self accomplishment . Yes , today , it is a rarity that anyone can still drive a manual . but it does not make them better than modern automatics .
For a daily driver it is auto all the way . For a fun vehicle it's a manual .
Give me a 69 SS Camaro or a 69 Mustang GT and I would be embarrassed to have an auto , but for backing up a boat to the lake in a daily driver it is auto all the way .

Exactly what I did 750 miles away in Salt Lake. Drove back through Moab and did the White Rim Trail in one day. I've had six Toyota pick-ups and only one AT, a 2017 OR that lasted a year and traded it for the 18 MT.

Deal with fucking San Francisco streets for one day and you will never regret your automatic.

if i had an automatic on those streets I'd be instantly regretting what I've done.

i don't get it. autos are good for when mt's aren't? ok... when are mt's not good again? not good for having to use the clutch and shifter a lot? where is that damn emoji...

Manual all the way, with that said, I definitely need to get used to shifting in the taco. It really does feel like your towing a trailer in the first two gears. Unless there’s an update out there I don’t know about.

My wife and I drove the Crosstrek and the Forester in a manual. She turned to me after driving both (yes, unlike some wives/gfs, she's a three pedal gal) and said "no balls, you can't get either of these". She drove my Tacoma (like she stole it, honestly), got out and said "this is the one".

I didn't know they made the Crosstrek in a manual.

I can’t argue that the Crosstrek is fast, because it simply isn’t. What made it “fun” for me was the higher center of gravity compared to an Impreza, and taking a twisty back road driving a slow car fast.

Slow car fast can be just as fun if not more fun than fast car fast depending on the road. If I wanted a speedy truck I would have bought the Tundra and settled for 12 mpg’s but I didn’t buy the truck for speed.

That being said, this thread has been interesting and I realize I asked a pretty subjective question.

If it really came down to choosing a Crosstrek or a Tacoma I think you’d have to ask yourself how important MPG’s, reliability, and towing are to you. I didn’t cross shop the Crosstrek and Tacoma because they are much different strokes for different folks.

Quite similar to shopping the manual vs. automatic transmission of the Tacoma.

my wife as well. i was looking at the Crosstek for her to replace the Tiguan she had at the time, and she wanted another MT. her last was an Impreza wagon 5MT and we loved that car. but it just wasn't enough for a family of 5. and no MT's to be found in the category she's in. we ended up getting a Volvo and although it's AT we are super happy with it. and I'm driving it to CO next week! and the nice thing for this trip is it's riding on these...
