So......... Let’s get this straight. Have you looked at the thread for TSB for manuals? If so..... How many dealers have you addressed this issue with? I had one dealer tell me to scram and another dealer helped me right away with updating the ECU. The bottom line is if you don’t like it. Sell it, pawn it, or burn it up and buy something you will enjoy. All vehicles have quirks of some sort. Must of ours are fixable but if you hate it buy something else. The Ranger would be great if you like zero problems at all. The new platform has been a great longevity with no problems...

 

To OP. I’m saving some tokkens for OVTUNE might take a few months but worth it. a lot of people swear it’s like a new truck and I haven’t seen a single person say it has damaged there truck. . ... I’ve also read on multiple forums that you can revert back to stock tune for dealer visits easily.

In the mean time I run 89 octane instead of 87 recommended. in SoCal. My truck used to misfire at idle on 87. And now it doesn’t on 89.... Just my 2 cents.

Run 89 or higher.
And consider ovtune.

I've had both Gen2 and Gen 3. Gen 2 more power? nope, just a bit more low end torque and 20% worse mpg. Gen 3 a power house? nope. It's a rather undersized engine for the given size and weight of the gen 3 but it does move the truck around and under normal circumstances I'm never been left at the stop light with Prius' leaving me in the dust. As to the acceleration issues you're having, I can't speak to that as my 2019 AT runs just great save a bit of 6th gear highway driving on hilly roads.

Sell or trade it and get something you will like. Maybe the new Ford Ranger 2.3 EcoBoost power plant

 

Sounds like you've already made your decision and looking for confirmation. Do what makes you happy.

 

OP, let the engine break-in, do the first oil change, report back. Unfortunately you won't get much help here when complaining. One thing I've learned long ago, some forum members are very defensive about their rides.

 

Wish I had a real nice 3rd Gen with a manual transmission. But I am stuck with what I have. A very nice Toyota truck.

 

For the record I'm no "fanboy". I don't even own a Toyota let alone a Tacoma. I've never owned an import, ever. I will own a '19 Camry LE after this winter passes and hopefully after that purchase I will be able to find the exact Tacoma I'm wanting to buy. I've done the research on the Camry. I'm doing the research on the Tacoma now. That's something more folks ought to do.

My previous vehicle was a Matrix. Great car but ohhhhh so underpowered on hills, even with MT. I can actually use the passing lanes when I drive my V6 Tacoma in the mountains, can you believe it? Holding 60mph up a long grade just didn't happen until I got my truck.

Of course I had a V6 Ranger before that, but that's another story.

Yes I have and the dealer installed the latest software update. Definitely improved throttle response, but didn't cure the surging/engine miss. I have only owned it 6 months, unfortunately it's worth considerably less than what I owe so I'm stuck. With all the incentives Toyota put out last year it severely affected the typical Tacoma resale

 

Are you looking for sympathy?

 

It’s worth “considerably” less than you owe ? Must have gotten a really bad deal on it.

 

With zero down and 125% of value financing I’m sure there are many around that are ass backwards in their trucks

 

You will find that complaining will get you nowhere. This isn’t your diary
30k miles on mine, and loved every second. Plenty of power if you put your foot down. Get compliments all the time and baby it. Mine was quirky in the beginning but the TSB updates helped immensely.

Well I would suggest looking at other comparable vehicles if you are looking for a mid-sized pickup truck. You mind find something you like better. I have a manual and I have enjoyed mine even with its little issues here and there but every truck and owner isn’t a perfect match. Do what you gotta do.
