    The removal of the clutch shuttle valve (clutch accumulator) is required when installing a twin disc style clutch to gain more travel in the hydraulic system. I run a Competition Clutch Stage 3 dual friction clutch in my 2013 4x4 Tacoma and even with all the play taken out of the clutch pedal i had a difficult time getting it into 1st gear at a stop. This solved the problem. It also made the clutch a little bit easier to depress and gave it better feel.



    Notes:
    -I clamped the fluid hose at the clutch master with clamping pliers to keep the master from draining. Bleeding was super fast too.
    -I accessed the upper shuttle valve bolt through the fender well with a long extension, shallow 12mm socket attached to a universal joint.
    -The fitting to join the two hydraulic lines is metric thread available at a local parts store.

    Not sure that the four cylinders even have it. But, otherwise, yes. The fluid accumulator is garbage.

    What is its purpose? I think the 4 cylinders have it....my pedal likes to stick to the floor in really cold weather till I've been driving for a while.

    Yes, removal brings consistency back to the clutch travel. That is, it will always engage and disengage at the same point in the pedal travel and the action is predictable and consistent. There is a discussion thread in the 3rd gen area as well as a one where a member is making up pre-bent kits for guy that don't want to mess with flaring or bending brake line.

    I realize this is a 2nd gen thread, but I am a strong advocate for this mod and highly recommend it.

    I'm in the same camp you are about this accumulator.

    The avatar was a "technical diagram " my friend sent me the day before he taught me to hand load my own ammunition. :)

    My wife than made t-shirts for us both with it on the front...its a good chuckle amongst us all.

    General consensus is that Toyota added it to "slip" the clutch a little for the driver. It basically slows down the engage or disengage of the plate by slowing down the fluid traveling to and from the slave cylinder. And this makes it easier for drivers with less experience on a manual transmission. Best guess is, it's an attempt to prevent the "dumping" of the clutch and stall or buck the engine

    I dont have a manual in my truck , but if the delete kit gives you more pedal travel , I also highly recommend performing this mod .
    These trucks dont come with enough adjustment to keep everything performing properly over the lifetime of the clutch and I have the proof . If this is something that can be done to increase clutch longevity as well as " throw out bearing " longevity , get er done .
    A cheap fix to a serious design flaw .
    How many of you actually adjust your clutch pedal according to the FSM ?

    Not I. I' haven't even bled the fluid in the clutch system - something I keep meaning to do. I'm (over)due for another full brake flush. I'll be waiting for warmer weather. That'll be a good time to do it.

    The original post says this part is available at the local auto parts store. Can we get a part number, or more details than "metric thread"?

    Thanks! @rat107 's video is what started me down the rabbit hole. @RedBeard1 closed the circle when he confirmed the suspicion that our brake lines and fittings are the same as the clutch side.

    Also, a huge thumbs up for @Trident904 for making drop in kits.

    Yep, and makes people who have driven stick since day one look like a novice. If I drive my truck like ANY of my previous manual vehicles, I look like a novice. I can drive it smooth, but refuse to change my habits because of a crappy device designed for n00bs.

    Current ‘07 Tacoma DCSB 4x4 with the WORST clutch feel of any vehicle I’ve owned or driven.

    Edit- oh, it’s broke, you just didn’t KNOW it was broke! ;)

    I agree with the rest. All I've owned are manuals and this manual by far is the worst. No matter how much I drive it, I cant seem to get a consistent or smooth shift.

    I try changing up the way I drive or shift each time and I still can never get smooth transitions. Not sure if this mod would help.

    Does the 5 speed have an accumulator? The pedal in my Tacoma leaves a lot to be desired
