Come one, come all....

This thread is to start the discussion about creating the plug and play harness. There are some design considerations that I would like to get some feedback on from those of you interested.

I wanted to add a big thanks to @BigWhiteTRD for his work in developing this mod, and everyone else that helped get this working. The mod is documented in the thread below if you want more information on what it is and how it works. There is a ton of good information in there, including the diagrams to do this yourself if you don't want to wait for a harness.

The price will be $125 with the switch included, and $110 without the switch.

I will be posting a thread in the for-sale section tomorrow evening. Everyone on the list so far will get a PM with the link to the order form. Once everyone there is all taken care of I will start taking more orders.

Price is TBD once I settle on design and get pricing. I will not give a firm price yet. To give everyone a rough idea, The connectors alone are $35, Resistor and relay are another $15-$20, a PCB for the relays another $15-$20 (includes associated interconnects), and wire another $5 so that is ~$70. I will also need to add labor for crimping and assembly which I estimate to be around 2 hours (cost TBD). Im still actively working on the PCB and BOM for all the components and will update as soon as I have everything figured out. *Edit* - See below regarding relay PCB

Questions:
1. Do you want truly plug and play (With everything included), or just a bare bones harness? - Seems like 100% P&P is the consensus so far.

2. I do not want to use the giant ice cube relays from Amazon. I am currently designing a PCB to house 2 smaller relays. Does this sound like a good plan? This is going to be too costly. I am just going to use an ice cube relay (4PDT) and a lug terminal base to eliminate the large terminal block. All the relay wires will go to a molex plug for ease of installation and assembly. No plug really necessary when using a base for the relay.

3. If people like the aironboard.com switches, I can plan accordingly. Annoyingly, I cannot get the connector pigtail for their switch, unless someone has a source. I do not think i will include the switch due to personal preference. I will likely make provisions for easily wiring in whatever switch you want to use. I plan to include (tentatively) the switch below. It is the oem style one sized to fit in the open slots below the HVAC controls. There is also the larger style to fit in an open slot to the left of the steering wheel. I will be putting a poll up at some point to get a count who needs what location for the switch. It is going to be too difficult to include the different switches for everyone. I will supply the harness with enough wire to get to your desired location. This will include the connector attached for either style switch (they are the same)

Update 02/19/2019:

I was able to finish up building my test harness. Before anyone says anything, yes the wires are super long between the connectors and relay. It was intentional. This was a quick and dirty test to prove out the concept of PnP. The better half is out of town this weekend so I have garage time all to myself. When I do the test install this weekend I will check wire lengths and figure out how to make it all pretty.

I received the switch from the 2nd vendor and I can confirm they do use the same connector. I was also able to confirm that the larger (left mounted) switches from aironboard use the same connector. I can source this connector and have the harness ready to plug in to your choice of switch with the appropriate length wire attached.

Here is what I ended up with. I tested the relay and switch with a 12V power supply I had laying around. These Amazon relays are rather shitty. I will not be using them.



In action:

Here is a crappy video of going in and out of 2Low.

Order of things I did in the video.
1. Push the button. (on)
2. Move selector to 4Hi and wait for it to engage. (I had to drive forward a few feet and turn the steering wheel to get it to line up)
3. Move selector to 4Low (wait for it to engage. I have the MT so the truck beeped at me until I pushed in the clutch.)
4. You are in 2WD low range. HORAY!

5. Push the button again. (off)
6. Shift to 4Hi, then to 2Hi and wait for everything to disengage.

I also showed normal 4HI and 4Low engagement at the end. I realize you can't see that it's in 2Low in the video, but trust me it is. Yesterday I pulled up the hill on the left (my yard covered in about 4" of wet heavy snow) and spun the back tires on the pavement. The front tires didn't do a damn thing.

Yes, my seatbelt is not on, no my door is not a jar.

Edit: plug and play all the way to a switch preferred.

And titanium, I'm kinda partial to Ti. If not possible, then I'll mainstream it.

3) I’d say don’t include switch, people will likely put them in diff places or want something special for a switch. Just include plenty of length of wire

Idk about everyone else but personally I’m more than willing to pay more for a clean professional product.

 

I would like a truly plug and play with a switch option,having a switch that fit one of the factory openings would be ideal.

 

Less chance of getting a wire crossed as well....

 

Just so everyone knows, the appropriate switch is available for the area under the AC controls in the center or to the left of the steering wheel if you have open slots.

Well how about that, I didn’t realize there was actually one out there that said 2wd low. I’d be down for that included if others are. My only opening available is below the hvac controls

Yes it does, and I would solder/terminate it appropriately. I wasn't going to mention it, but it is available in different colors. The only reason I wouldn't include it was if a significant number of people couldn't agree on which color configuration.

Edit* Yeah, probably not. Labor is the killer here. Lots of wire to strip and crimps to make.

 

Sounds very reasonable for price,just make sure not to underestimate the time you will have involved in not only production but shipping as well.

 

Yep definitely TBD. I do not have pricing for the connector crimping/assembly yet and the 2+ hr labor for that is the biggest unknown. I won't be getting a price this week, but I should be able to have something in the next 2 weeks.

Titanium is definitely one of my favorite metals. It's an absolute bitch to machine but god damn it's amazing.

The wife and I are both pretty rough on jewelry. She works outside in environmental conservation, and I'm a controls engineer. If I had a normal wedding band it would be destroyed in hours.

We have titanium bands with copper and silver inlay. Had 'em for a year and they still look new.
