I noticed it on mine too! Also when I'm at a complete stop on an incline and about to give it some gas to get in gear the tranny makes a loud noise and stalls for a split second followed by the traction control light going off on dash (made a thread on it)

I just took it in for 15k mile service and dealer said others mentioned exact same issue so they put it on my file but said there's nothing they can do now and it's probably normal

I’ve owned 4 Tacoma’s and they all clunked. Never have thought twice about it and probably never will.

I don’t think thats tranny noise it’s the traction control operating. Doesn’t make since to me why it does it when it does it.

I think this is strictly an auto characteristic, correct? My 1996 1st gen manual that I learned to drive when I was 8 never once clunked. It was in the family since new and I sold it with 255k on it. Went through 3 leaf packs as i snapped two sets from two much weight in the bed. Cousin had a pre first gen, 2 first gens, and one 2nd gen. No clunk complaints but again alll manuals. His sister had one 1st gen that I drove a bunch. No clunk and it was lifted on 35’s. 3 of my best friends combined had 4 gen 1’s without the clunk (3 1st gen 4runners as well ha). But they were all manuals every single one of them. Guess axel wrap is just tied more to the autos?

Edit: strictly probably isn’t the right word. More common I meant.

My 2nd gen clunked basically every shift, and pretty much every half quick stop. It was always like that, my uncles is the same, and so is my friends. Just the way these trucks are I think, they were all auto DCLB. I have an 18 and it drives just like they did. I don’t really find it shifts any different than the 2nd Gen, just an extra gear. It’s defiantly got more get up and go then my 4.slow did for sure ! Very happy with my 18 DCLB Sport

I have a front end clunk when I pull or back out of a parking space and turn the wheel. Service dept. said they know new trucks are not suppose to clunk but go ahead and drive it as it was documented. So I'll drive it and ignore the clunk.

I had a 2003 Dodge Dakota that would clunk when I put it in reverse. It done it the entire time I owned it. (12 years)

You were going to trade it a perfectly working truck that gets you from point A to point B because of a noise?

4Runner Trail wheels and Toyo Open Country ATII tires 265-70-17. Cosmetic stuff like Pro grille and OffRoad black bumper trim, vinyl delete on side, added hood graphic, OEM tube steps.
Toyota (and many other mfg's) have been fighting this axle wrap issue for almost 20 years. It'd be a miracle if they actually fixed it.

Just got mine back from my 15,000 service yesterday. Mentioned the clunk . They gave me the latest update and said to let them know if it continued to happen and if it did they want to take a look at it again so we will see. I know others have mentioned this as normal and to get over it but to me it shouldn't be normal. Maybe that's just me since this is the first Tacoma I have owned. I have been driving for 45 years and have never had an automobile do this including the 2 F150's I drove for 22 years. :annoyed:

My service manager had never encountered anything like mine during the test drive.
They tried (based on TSB 23) one set of rear axles which were tight, no improvement, then another set that fit correct, no improvement. No defined path forward.

Service manager acknowledged a significant amount of time on each maintenance/warranty related conference call talks specifically to third gen Tacoma’s. Some service managers will claim things are normal per him. Toyota has concerns with the cost of chargebacks due to various issues.

I think they could have fixed it... eventually. I’m not that patient, the time and hassle got to be too much and I can’t do that for a few more months.

    Bought a 4Runner.

I had really bad axle wrap clunking in my 1999 Tacoma (automatic)...my 04 Tacoma that I have now is a manual and I've never experienced axle wrap with it in the 3 years/50k miles I've owned it. I think it's almost exclusively and issue with the automatics.

I have noticed this too. I can feel the shift and it makes a clunk. Happens once or twice a day. I'll have to pay attention to how early in my drive it happens.

After driving mine for a couple of weeks since the15,000 mile service where they reset the transmission plus the latest update, it appears to be driving better. Haven't had the hard clunk yet. Felt a soft bump a couple of times but not near as bad and I can live with that. Hopefully this will continue to be the case.
