How did you know? Secondary air valves shorted out and turned the whole truck off.

The last two times they failed, the truck went into limp mode. What is the difference?

I have done them now at 43k, 105k and 125k. Fucking ridiculous design. I really want to keep this truck for 300k miles. But not if it means random tows home every 20-40k miles. Do I need to buy them in bulk and change them every 4th oil change like a maintenance item?

I thought there was a common fix for that on the 2012s that a lot of guys on here do, @DarthPow did it on his truck he was showing me last time we wheeled together. Maybe he can explain it for ya cause I don't remember the details.

edit - there's a big thread on it here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/secondary-air-injection-switching-valve.381997/

Its cuase you took the T|X Baja graphics off in place of a TRD sticker o_O

But for real, that sucks. Hopes its something simple

Edit - just finished reading the whole thread

Yea, its the secondary air injection pump thing, here's the thread on it: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/uni-filter-mod-on-2-7.489348/
That one is for the 2.7, but the 4.0 2012s have it also, and its the same pump/system.

Basically gist of it is, that intake has a small foam filter that can degrade, break down, and get sucked into the system, so you take the foam filter out, and replace the intake with a small intake filter, and it prevents the expensive repair that could happen if that tiny stupid foam filter breaks apart.

I honestly don't know what the symptoms are if that happens though, so I can't really say if this fits the bill for that, but its worth opening up that pump and checking the condition of that foam.

I also own a 2012 and the Secondary pump just went back a month ago at 57k. I decided to buy the harness to bypass it. sounds like it was the best decision i made, it took me about an hour to do the job.
    Highly recommend it.

The awful system has two common and $1000 modes of failure. 1) The $.10 foam pad breaks down and gets sucked through the $1000 air pump, killing it. 2) The valves that the pump connects to stop valveing, throw a set of P codes and put the truck into limp mode. Those are $1200 at the dealer or $210 if you buy a Tundra valves off rock auto (Dorman part# 911-643). You have to remove the valves from the Tundra assembly and screw them onto the Tacoma tube. But it is 8 T25 screws.

Is there is good thread on the harness? I remember the first were coming out when mine died the first time. I skipped them because I was worried about emissions checks here in NY.

I am not sure, i just went with it because of their reviews. They were super helpful, called them twice and they were very accessible. You cant beat the price either.

Isn't there a dealer recall, or extended warranty, or whatever they call it, on this?

You can delete the secondary air pump system now using hp tuners. Here is a thread with all the info you'll need. Lots of folks willing to help in there. If i were you, id get rid of that before you have to deal with it again

Here is my 2013 with that crap removed. Youll need exhaust block off plates

Dude, whenever I hear 2012 and truck not working right, I default to secondary air valve. And like 99% of the time I’m right.

    I like these threads.

I wish there was a way to bet against you. I don't think this is a AIP issue, but I also don't know what the real issue is either.
