I don't no how this happened but when I was done fuelling up tonight my gas door lid would not close and seems severely bent and out of place. Only thing I can think of is when I was closing it the plastic lanyard that's attached to the gas cap got smashed in between the hinge and the door lid. It's not as easy as you would think bending this thing back. Something feels wrong... Anyone come across this??? Any help would be greatly appreciated

There was a post similar to this, not too long ago. I'll see if I can locate that post.

Have you tried to bend it back and see if you can get it back to normal with a dealer or body shop fiasco? You’ve got nothing to lose at this point. Worst case would be to replace the assembly but at least you could say you tried!

This exact thing happened to me this summer. Was driving on the highway and a roughly 2' wide transverse asphalt repair had sagged and I hit the depression at 75. Couldn't avoid it do to other drivers and hit very hard. Went to gas up a few miles down the road and noticed the door was cranked. It was bad enough that the door chipped the paint in the top right when I tried to put it back in.

Eventually had to get a replacement installed and painted. Ran $120.

This just happened to my Tacoma about a month ago. I went to the gas station filled up and I was watching the guy trying to close the gas cap door and it was bent just like yours. I don’t know if he did or what, all I did was very gently bend back Into place and now it’s fine.

The key here is lube it before you trash it. I saw another thread and went out and lubed it a while ago. I will lube it again in the morning.

Warped door? Look to see of there’s a fuel nozzle lying on the ground nearby. :anonymous:

What’s everyone using to lube the hinges? Some sort of dry spray

It looks to seem most that have this problem are 16s on yr 2/3. So thinking yearly lubing should be good

Bumping this. Last time I fueled up when I closed the door I heard a weird pop. Today when I gassed up the door wouldn’t close. Had to bend it and force it. Not sure what the deal is. Haven’t been in some sort of accident where things shifted. Anyone know?

Same thing happened to mine, I went to the dealer to ask them about it and a possible repair. They tried to give me a $300 repair estimate, I told them to pound sand and bent it back myself. It’s not perfect but it shuts and doesn’t hit the paint.

This just happened to mine too. Thought someone intentionally did this but seems like it just happens? Strange...

It’s the plastic lanyard twisted the wrong way, open the door and flip the lanyard the other way. Simple mine has done it too. Don’t force the door!
