Chirping sound from engine

Just noticed a chirping sound in the engine. It doesn't seem to change with RPM but not noticeable at idle. Once I rev up around 2000 rpm I can hear it. Higher RPMs don't seem to change the sound or frequency.

I'm pretty sure it's related to the belt that goes around the alternator and other parts. Does anyone know if that belt has a somewhat consistent RPM that doesn't go higher than a certain speed? Or is there something it's attached to that is somehow RPM limited? I'm wondering if maybe it's the alternator not the belt itself, but don't know enough about all that stuff in there to make a more educated guess.

Does it sound like crickets? Mine was horrible. It's the fuel pump. There's a tsb for it.

You don't hear the HPFP when at higher rpms. He is hearing his chirp at higher rpms. It's the serpentine belt and/or a pulley if I had to put money on it.

 

Yeah, pretty sure it's the belt or something it's connected to. Just not sure since RMP doesn't seems to change the sound only makes it obvious.

Not necessarily. There can be many issues with it: damaged, misaligned, loose, worn etc.

 

Since this is part of the engine should I expect it to be covered under the 60/60000 powertrain warranty? I'm at 52000.

 

Likely the idler pulley. And technically not covered under Powertrain warranty. This would be covered under 36 month bumper to bumper warranty however.

 

Yeah, bearing maybe. Sounds like the same noise I repair on my Wrangler's idler (don't hate) it's been awesome for 200,000. Cheap fix if that's all it is.

 

Mine was replaced on the taco at 24k.

OP, try spraying the area lightly with compressed air. Sometimes dust can collect, and cause the issues. Very common.

 

The compressed air may have worked. I sprayed the idler pulley and saw a bit of dust come off and now I don't notice the chirping.

The pulley is a bit wobbly but not sure what's normal. I guess for now it's fine.

 

Glad it helped. It’s pretty common. It is normal for the pulley to have a very slight wobble to it. They all do.

 

Mine has been reported and dealer did not locate when left over night a year and a half ago. I’ve been dealing with it using loud music. Now after my warranty has ended it’s louder. Ugh - back at in service and sound examples shared with the techs. I hope Toyota can help this design or part improvement. New truck it’s started about the 12k mark and off and on till now. Hot or cold it can be heard.

I had same issue. See link below. Of course I could not replicate at dealership. I finally caught it with a video/audio recording on cell phone. Insisted dealer fix it. Took them a month to get the V Belt.

They been having belt issues on their trucks for the last 20 years. Can't believe its still going on.

 

Happy to report Toyota T-SB-0098-20 “replaced belt” and noise went away. Cost =$0 even after warranty expired.
