The factory cooler isn’t going to do a hell of a lot. If you’re towing on a flat highway the transmission stays the same temp as though you weren’t towing at all. If you’re pulling hard up mountain passes and the truck unlocks the torque converter the factory cooler is a fart in a hurricane. Temps will skyrocket, anyone who tows with an ultra gauge knows what I’m talking about.

Same with long steep ascents in 4LO (4Hi fries fluid) There isn’t enough air flow at low speed to do anything at all.

You might want to look at @pmstoy10 's setup. He worked a fan into his setup. You're going to need all the help you can get.

No fan..... yet.... But I haven't needed to add a fan since I'm cruising not crawling.
@KissmyTaco - you'll definitely want something aftermarket. My trailer is 3700# dry, but we load up a ton of crap in the truck when we go for multiple weeks so I'm probably pushing 6k when all is said and done (including people, etc.). The cooler I added certainly made a huge difference towing in the ADK mountains. I keep my truck in 4th (second Gen) to keep the torque converter locked - not sure how to handle that with a 3rd gen. I'd also check out the Towing Bible thread. There was someone who had a 3rd gen and did the same thing with a fan. I think it was linked somewhat earlier, but I've been in the woods the past couple days with no service so I'm behind on the thread.

Edit:. This is where I got my inspiration

I’d have a concern that a larger cooler in front of the radiator would obstruct airflow through the rad which would create a far bigger issue than transmission temps.

Hasn't been my experience. My coolant temp doesn't move away from around 185 -190 even when towing. I monitor it with Torque

Pardon my ignorance, can someone with the factory external air cooler explain how the lines run. I need to know how to install an external cooler as I don’t currently have one. I glanced at a truck a while back and it had a line in and out of the radiator just like mine. It also had two hoses from the external cooler thru the radiator support and down to I don’t know where. Where do they go?

Hot fluid goes in the top engine radiator trans line and comes out the bottom trans line and back to the trans.
So , now come out of the bottom of the engine rad and go to your new cooler. Then from the new cooler back to the trans line that was on the bottom of the engine rad originally.

Those two lines through the rad support are the feed line from the bottom of the rad, then a return line going back to the trans.

    No problem! Mornin' back atcha!
I'd send you the custom codes but we have a different gen so I don't think they are the same.

I think I understand how to add a cooler after the radiator cooler. If I wanted to do it like the factory lines how would I do that. I don’t get how there is a line in and a line out the radiator cooler just as tho there isn’t an external cooler attached. The oem external cooler has two lines and the external has 2 lines. I don’t see how they are in series as there appears to be four separate lines/hoses.

Based on your current setup and the lack of an external ATF cooler, and also based on what @rblalliance said, look at this photo below that you posted, and that I added arrows to:

    upload_2020-6-24_11-5-6.jpg

    1) You would remove the existing hose from the connection at the bottom left hand side of your radiator, the one with the blue arrow.
    2) Then you would run a new hose from this same connection to the "fluid in" connection of your new aftermarket ATF cooler.
    3) Then you would need to run a new hose from the "fluid out" connection of that new ATF cooler, and connect it to the existing hose with the blue arrow you pulled off.
    * The hose with the red arrow remains untouched.
    * The hose with the yellow X's is not part of the system at all.

From what I am reading online and what some have said in your thread, that is the path the fluid should take.

I'd like to hear what @gearcruncher has to say though.

Custom codes for what? It's not a simple function of the software/app?

Thank you. I'm at 4300# empty, probably going to be about 5000-5200# in trailer for long weekends. Heading up to northern AZ presents some 6% grades so I think I can use all the help I can get.
See you are in NY, grew up on SI, went to undergrad at SUNY Oneonta.
