Sup guys. Picked a '20 TRD Sport manual. Really wanted a 6 foot bed and manual trans so this was the only option. So wish they made a manual TRD OR access cab.

Anyway, I was reading my owners manual and have a noob question. I see the auto LSD only works in 2wd mode?

Is there any sort of brake torquing computer magic that can happen 4wd modes?

So example.. if I'm in 4 hi or 4 low and tap the button briefly to disable Trac, is the auto LSD going to do anything?

Then I understand holding it down turns off Trac vsc and sway all the nannies so you can go full send if you need to keep wheel speed up for sand or whatever.

I also searched and see I get the short end of the stick. Can't really install an e locker from a TRD OR and nobody makes mech LSD for the 8.75" :( I feel like an air locker is overkill for what I'm going to do lol

Yes, there's brake magic for traction control in 4wd when the 'TRAC OFF' light isn't lit. AutoLSD is just a specific tune of TRAC (traction control) that doesn't utilize engine cut and just compares speeds of driven wheels across an axle to brake slipping wheels and simulate a limited slip.

You have a manual so the 3rd gen rear elocker can be fit into your diff.

The thread I read of someone trying that was an absolute cluster in the beginning. Never saw if they were able to do it. I'll re visit it later tonight

Huh I thought manuals had ATRAC. I’ve run into a handful of 4Runners on the trail who had trouble in sand, snow , and hills who I had to press the ATRAC button for them which easily got them out of their situation. By default their 4lo was open diff. That is Some good information on that post

Pretty sure if it's not the off-road it doesn't have A-TRAC. The 4runner has that though.

there is the 2Lo mod available for the 3rd gen, although i wouldn't know if he has any on hand.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-2wd-low-range-for-the-3rd-gen-tacoma.614743/

the benefit is the ability to steer easily and without binding in lo range. but read the thread before committing.

I just ordered some 16" wheels and wildpeak 265/75/16 tires. I think for the snow and sand I'll see, those tires should do a lot for me. And HOPEFULLY with proper air pressure for what I'm doing, traction boards, and a shovel.... I can avoid many of the situations requiring an LSD or locker to get me free :)

I am new to the Tacoma too. I have an SR. Driving down a grassy/dirt lane in 4WD yesterday, I turned around with a 3 point turnaround and the back wheels broke loose on the steep grade (it was wet). The dash light blinked indicating the brake system (autoLSD) was taking care of the spinning wheel. So it does work in 4WD without hitting any switches.
