Supercharger maintenance: rebuild?

Inquiring about supercharger maintenance, coming up on 100k miles. I've done a search, found this:

Super helpful, however also found another thread where they mentioned requiring a "rebuild" at 100k miles and the rebuild kit is $750. Since the truck's at the shop already for an undetermined amount of time (sigh....), was thinking of having them do the maintenance if the price is fair. Now I DID do the SC belt already and changed the plugs already (Iridiuns) so good to go there... Not sure where to buy rebuild kit, had already done Google search and couldn't find. Honestly not even sure if that's required, hence my inquiry.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Not familiar with maintenance intervals, but i gound this when he replaced the bearings on his supercharger.

I'm going to go ahead and do the oil and whatnot, and leave the rest be... It's just way too complicated. I'll revisit this in another 10k miles lol

 

The 3.4L (1st gen Tacoma V6) supercharger is completely different from the TRD/Magnuson 4.0L supercharger.

I had the dealer do my supercharger rebuild a couple years ago, they charged me $735.00

 

The dealership I go to knows nothing about SCer maintenance. They said they couldn't find anythimg from Toyota about even needing the maintenance at 100k miles.

Yes this is everything for a basic rebuild from what I understand.

Im in the same boat as you looking to do the rebuild also, but only have about 50k on mine. Its on my FJ. I will swap it over to the Taco prolly this spring, and do the rebuild then. I have a little oil weeping out around the cone. Hardly anything, but I want to go ahead and do it all since I will have it out.

 

I was quoted $550 for supercharger oil and scer coolant change. Seems high. Infact ill figure that out myself if it's accurate lol

Do they have coolant?

 

Yes this is the coolant in the intercooler. So you have a small intercooler pump that circulates the coolant from the supercharger down through the intercooler in front of the radiator. Should be the same pink coolant as the radiator.

This was on an older 3.4l almost 10 years ago now, but at the time Magnussen was doing the rebuilds for very nearly the same cost as the parts. I just pulled just the 'guts' off and sent it to them and got it back a week or so later rebuilt and tested. I'm not sure if they still do that, but possibly worth looking into.

 

I honestly do not see anything about the coolant there though, unless it's the last video where you take the top off to get to the intercooler, but I'm just making an assumption... that coolant fluid would be in there lol

 

I’m a little lost but I honestly just skimmed over everything. So first.....Toyota states maintenance at 100k. At the bare minimum a s/c oil should be changed. This is easy. It involves taking a bolt off, using the syringe to extract the oil (it stinks badly so be careful), replacing the oil, put the bolt back on. At the 100k maintenance you really should do the s/c oil, swap the impeller bearings, swap the coupler, belt, and inspect the rotors for wear. I’d also swap your spark plugs regardless of how many miles you have on them at that time since you have everything exposed. 2 of the drivers side plugs are almost impossible to change unless everything is off. However, a few guys from that thread I sent you have swapped the plugs with a sneaky setup of swivels, extensions, and a ratchet. Superchargeronline.com are very reputable and can do the rebuild for you if you send them your stuff. Keep in mind if you have modded the motor.....tune, exhaust, pulley, etc. you should do the maintenance sooner. What exactly did you need to know about the s/c coolant?

 

Yes, do not take the supercharger off to change the plugs. There’s like a couple bolts you have to undo for the fuel assembly or whatever it holds to get that out-of-the-way just so your hand can fit in there. Need 2 short, sockets, a small ratchet with hinge and a wobble.

 

I have a questions about this:
1) I bought truck at 25K miles with supercharger in 2014, now have 95K. I have changed the oil on it (around 70k miles) but that's the only maintenance I've done. It's not making noise, but I can't seem to get more than about 4psi of boost. Should I be looking into a rebuild?
2) Does anyone have a link for an explanation of how to remove the supercharger? Mainly I'm not sure I would know how to get the belt off...
3) Reviewing links here it seems the options are to send off for a rebuild or order a rebuild kit and do it yourself. I don't have a press and not sure a rebuild kit is doable without it. Any insights?

Probably needs tuning, How far advanced is your timing? Pulley size? The belt comes off with the tensioner underneath. You have to take the skid plate off and then two bolts and the whole tensioner Hass to come off to remove the sc belt or other belt behind. SC supposed to be good for at least 100,000 miles and you changed the oil in it then it should be good for a little more. The advice here I got is wait until it starts making weird noises.

 

Thanks, I think I'll hold off. I do have a tune on my truck and actually in lower gear it does look I'm hitting higher boost numbers. Sounds like unless it's making noise best to leave it alone.
