Brake Upgrade: StopTech Rotors + TRD Performance Pads

pretty sure i have been running non cryo stoptechs without issues for a few years.

 

please enlighten me. It’s true I have the Sport model, but what does that give regarding the brakes vs the other models?

I believe Sport and OffRoad have different brake boosters. Sport has “hill assist” which holds the brakes for ~2s so you don’t slip back on a hill with MT. I think some sport owners may not be aware that this is specific to sport and not available with all MT's? I definitely have no such help with my OffRoad

Outside of that, I'm not up to date on the specific differences between the two boosters to know how/if one is preferable for rear disks or why the design choices lead to two different solutions based on trim.

 

Just got my brake upgrade finished and took a 4 day off-roading/camping trip through the desert - everything worked great! I was really nice to get rid of my old setup that had terrible vibrations. Figured I'd chime in to re-confirm what's currently being shipped for the StopTech rotors.

I purchased the cryo version with part number: 126.44129CS. They're beefier than stock in pretty much every dimension so it's no wonder they handle heat better.

Old rotors weighed 17.0lbs
New rotors weighed 18.2lbs





My old pads weren't looking so good.

Need to do front and rear brakes for my 2015 TRD OffRoad. Not happy with the Toyota OEM product or service from local dealerships (no need to elaborate what has already been discussed in this forum). Not interested in cross-drilled or slotted options - have tried on previous vehicles and found to be more hype and visual appeal that actual performance improvement. Am just looking for something as good or preferably better than OEM, have narrowed down to the Centric Premium Rotors and Drums line. I don't mind spending the extra $$ if its for real improvement, but not for hype. Given this as a backdrop have the following questions:

1. is there any real performance gains or improvement in longevity w/ Cryogenic Treated option ... is it worth it?
2. same question regarding the Centric High Carbon option?
3 thoughts on Centric Premium Pads & Shoes vs. other aftermarket options?

And stopping is scary! Glad to see you here, too, because I was unsure if it was the weight/heavy wheels.. or if there was simply something wrong w/ my braking system.
Guess it's the weight. I only have a base model, so no electronic master cylinder.

Upgrading the brakes is my next project. Not sure if I should just do the front or go all in w/ the rears.. I guess I need to read up on replacing the master cylinder, as I don't know anything about that yet..

 

Yes sir! There are a few of us that have the same layout; @Steelhead Taco and @Stopmithering come to mind. I wouldn’t describe the braking as scary but definitely as fully taxed. We had one time over the last 20,000 miles where after coming down a steep mountain CO pass that I noticed the hot wheels/brakes were hot, but didn’t have any brake fade. Planning on doing the front brake upgrade in about 10 days. I’m hoping for better brake feel and no more hot front brakes. I don’t this will improve stopping distance.

And no.. But I'm getting a lot of use out of it. Almost every weekend and a long trip every couple months. Very happy with it!!

I would describe mine as somewhat scary. I don't remember if I said this here or another thread (brake discussions going on here and on the four wheel camper forum), but I cannot make the wheels lock up. ABS has never come on because the wheels never lock up. Regular driving is fine, but the few times I've needed to stop fast I have to push the pedal down as hard as I can and it just slowly slows down. Usually, luckily, have the opportunity to swerve into another lane. There was one time I would have definitely plowed into the back of a little sports car ahole driver who cut me off and slammed on the brakes (I think he underestimated the distance to his turn.. He cut me off, slammed on the brakes and turned into a store, on a little 2 lane each direction divided highway w/ no turn-offs). I could not slow down as fast as he did, and had to do a violent swerve to avoid him. And that was a tipping hazard.. ugh..

Yeah, sorry about the our versus your switch up. Voice to text with minimal editing can be embarrassing sometimes. If your truck doesn’t have it already, you might want to consider getting a Helwig antisway bar for the rear really helps in high speed stability. But mine still sways during emergency maneuvers

Regarding your brakes, definitely sounds inferior to our trucks I would get it checked out by someone specializing. It could be as simple as your brake fluid is old or low, or maybe your pads are worn. I’ve heard good things about the Toyota TRD front brake pads.

Probably obvious by now, but I got this rig used, completely built. And the guy had the master cylinder replaced and other brake work done about 5000 miles before I received it.. Have the toyota invoice showing the work. So I've assumed it's OK. But I will check it all out.

But seriously thank you for the suggestion on the Archive hangers. Yesterday at the shop it was pointed out that one of the OEM hangers was bent and rubbing on the frame so we’re installing the archive hangers as per your suggestion

Ewww... Not sure I like this part:
Note: This kit includes parking brake option. However the OEM drum parking brake is superior to the the rear disc conversion parking brake for 2 reasons. 1) the oem parking brake shoes are larger & have approximately 50% more friction surface. Also the OEM drum diameter is larger in diameter as compared to the drum inside the rotor.

 

I want to do this but I'm mechanically not experienced enough to figure it out without someone holding my hand.

 

Oh totally, me as well. I’m not even going to install the front SS brake lines and rotors, my wife would worry too much

 

Because an OR or Pro model has an electronically boosted brake booster. If swapping to rear discs, they require substantial more fluid, which the OEM booster and MC may not be able to provide. So the fix is to swap to a larger MC with greater volume, SOS Performance sells MC kits. But if you have an ATRAC truck (aka OR/Pro) the MC upgrade isn't available.
