What is this?

I have seen this goo before in small quantities. I am not sure if it is a normal by-product of engine oil after 52K miles or if it indicates a coolant leak.

I just did an oil change. I have been using Mobil 1 5W-30 from 1200 miles to present. The engine is the V-6 in an 05 Tacoma. Oil changes every 7000 miles with Toyota filter.

I found the goo at the top end of the oil filler tube and here in the cap. The total quantity was about a half a shot glass full. A flashlight look down the tube showed a clean timing belt and surrounding area as far as I could see.

Any ideas?

 

x2, I was about the create a post about the same thing. I got my truck in August and did my first oil change in December. Mine is also a 05 V6.

isn't that from driving short trips with the engine not getting up to full temp and causing moisture to accumulate?

 

Yeah, I bet that is it. Most trips less than 10 miles. I shudda known.

I replaced the flux capacitor about a week ago so it ain't that.

 

hmm, I'd get a hot oil flush done... regardless of what it's from.

I searched and couldn't find anything...oh well. Should I just clean it out? I've never heard of a hot-oil flush?

I also have a short commute ~3 miles.

 

seems to me that alot of newer cars and trucks that have the extended filler neck tend to trap oil and condensat water more than the ones that don't have one.

 

Run the engine up to full operating temperature, a spin on the highway will get it done. Park the truck and immediately drain the oil, leave the plug out and let it drain good, change filter. If you don't mind the expense, re-fill and drive for a few hundred and hot drain again. Caveat, if you by necessity continue to drive short distances, engine not fully warmed, it will likely continue to happen.

Checked the oil today and I think I have the same issue. First thought was head gasket but that didn't make sense since oil looked normal.

2012, only ~2000 miles, 98% of driving has been trips over 150 miles

That's just nasty...

 

Check your air filter, there is probably a Chevy clogging the intake.

I would not be overly concerned about the small amount of moisture you have. Certainly longer trips would dissipate any moisture build up.
