I can’t imagine a shop would charge something reasonable for this job. While it’s not hard, it’s labor intensive, just takes a while because you have to remove quite a bit to get to them.

I asked a friend/toyota master tech who does work on the side from his home shop. He quoted me $700.

Then I just decided to do myself. I think if you have swapped suspension, you can do the cam gears yourself. Just takes time.

Im planning on doing it soon.

If you’ve done the spark plugs on the 1GR-FE before you can do this swap. It’s like a 3 banana out of 10 job. Not hard just takes time and an extra pair of hands helps for loosening the bolts on the gears.

Hmm. What about an intake manifold spacer as well as the cam gears? Damn it all. I'm supposed to be saving money...

I did them at the same time so I couldn’t tell you the difference. Cam gears, intake spacer, headers and a tune will make you think why didn’t it come stock like this.

You'd have to get a custom tune to really maximize the benefits I assume. Just a regular tune from an hp tuner or something wouldn't be enough would it?

I can probably make some 3rd gen gears that are a full 360° retarded. Just be careful not to install them incorrectly which would lead to a full 360° advanced. That could cause some real problems. Would cost a fortune to make such a wild gear and performance probably wouldn't be noticeable if at all ;)

They could just instal them in the glove box and enjoy the placebo effect of a second gen.
