The nyloc roof bolts go all the way through and have an allen key head. You can hold it still and have a helper tighten it the rest of the way.

The torque spec for the RSI is horrible... crushed the side of my bed. I did it to spec, 9 lbs.

I'm just curious what y'all are exactly referring to when you say you crushed the side of your bed? I tightened everything on mine by feel with a box end wrench so I wouldn't bend the mounting surface on the topper since that had been reported before but I don't see how you can "crush your bed". Any pictures for us to learn from?

Exactly, I would also like to know. I assembled mine by hand feel, ratchet. Everything got tightened just right. How can this be RSI's fault?...btw, I love my RSI EvoA cap!

You sure your torque wrench is properly calibrated? I'd be impressed that 9ft lbs was able to "crush" a bed.

Not emergency but urgent help needed. I'm about to install this cap in the next two hours, and the stupid square rubber pads are throwing me off. For some of the truck types they are used between the clamp and the truck paint to keep things nice. On the taco it just says to "Put them inline". What does that mean? Should they be between the mounting holes and the rubber gasket, or should they be evenly spaced between the mounting holes? I want to make sure I'm not screwing this up.

    Thanks!

Between the mounting holes and rubber gasket. It helps to keep the mounting surface from bending and buckling.

I'm assembling my EVOa cap now, and the parts list for a Tacoma (not the second gen, so I assume third gen?) includes a foam tape to install on the front of the bed. That doesn't make a ton of sense to me since the front panel on the bed is actually higher than the bed sides?

I've put butyl tape and silicone in between the gaps and under the plastic bedside trim pieces to help with water intrusion.

In any event, my cap did not come with that tape included in the hardware pack. I assume it's not an issue but wanted to make sure before I hoist it onto the truck.

When I got my diamondback I had to lift the front bed rail cap and put tape down, then lay the bed rail cap back onto that. I don’t think it changed the height. My cap was put on by a shop, so I’m not actually sure what they did. :anonymous:

What have you guys used to seal your front bed corners. I have my topper off for some body work and it’s never been sealed to well so I’m going to try and get the front corners water tight. Thanks in advance.

Long time lurker, but just made an account. My First post! Got my 2021 Tacoma OR on monday and My Smartcap Adventure arrived on Tuesday. The door sticker says the truck was made in 7/21, So I think its safe to wax it. Can, or should I put a coat of wax on the SmartCap as well? (Nufinish) or is that not advisable. Thanks!

Get some RTV and put a bunch on. Mine leaked like a sieve in that area until I did. Not a problem with the shell but one with the design of the bed.

I was just posting pictures to show plugs/installed for reference and what I did
Personally I refuse to use any rtv/silicone/butyl/putty etc on my bed, imo I find it slightly tacky. I don’t use or expect the bed/canopy to be water tight like a dwelling either. So the efforts I’ve made are oem (repurposed) solutions and I’m good with that. I had the foam pads only (no plugs) on the fiberglass for 3 yrs and obviously those hidden holes were still there- it did leak, I’m sure… I think. Honestly never paid it any mind (with the bed mat any water flowed under it and would drain or evaporate). I mean it was never a river flow which I’m sure I’d of noticed. Since the sale of the fiberglass, I finally was able to install the oem tonneau plugs and I made sure to make my cuts for a puzzle fit. I only removed a portion of the foam pad material on the header rail end caps that occupied the space of the now installed plugs. I’m super happy with the end result which I’m certain will be better than I’ve had for 3 yrs which also never bothered me- so I’m good.

I do get why those that do use the bed as a dwelling use extra measures but for me it’s a non issue.

    I also used OEM: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-ugly-blue-truck.722492/#post-25970759

The installer ripped them out leaving a giant hole they filled with silicone, foam, and butyl tape which looks like complete shit.

They also ripped up the bed caps and removed all the brand new very careful butyl tape job I did.

When asked they said my work was undoubtedly shoddy (guarantee they never evaluated it) and they could only guarantee their sloppy ass hillbilly looking final product against leaks.

This is why I don’t let others touch my truck. I would have told the guy to eat shit but I also wouldn’t have taken my truck anywhere. This was one of the huge selling points of the RSI for me. Assembled and installed by me so if there was a fuck up, it would have been my fault.
Correction, I actually do take my truck to only one place and that is for alignment but they do good work and let me watch and criticize them as they do it.
