CBI Offroad - Hidden Front Hitch Install

Been awhile since I provided an update.... I received an adaptor from CBI to address the receiver tubing issue not allowing insertion of standard equipment. I went this route because I wanted to use it also as a method to mount in the winch cradle in the bed when not in use.

I got my winch. I bought a refurbished Warn XD9000i. I wanted an integrated solenoid for portability and protection of the solenoid. The refurbished unit was about half of the retail price but only $200 less than you can get a new one on sale. Unit looks brand new and I haven't found any issues with it.

Here is the winch mounted in the cradle made by CBI. Also shown in the picture is the adaptor that they provided. My intention is to put this setup in the bed with a hitch pin tieing the cradle to the adaptor and two bolts down through the adaptor and through the bed.

Here is the cradle and winch on the truck in the front receiver. Note, no adpator is in here because the cradle fits the receiver great. The I didn't have time to hook up the wiring or try it out. I plan to setup for quick connects front and back. I am going to pick up a rattle free, locking hitch pin to pull the cradle tight to one side of the receiver. The lock will give peace of mind if I leave it on the truck.




The last updates will be to wire it up front and back for quick connects. Also, I need to work out the mount in the bed. I want to drop 2 bolts through the thru holes in the adaptor through the bed and have nuts welded on a plate that is mounted to the underside of the bed. I need to find the right spot and someone to do some welding for me. Ideally, I can pull the whole thing out and will only have two holes through the bed but when I put it in, I can drop the bolts through and thread to the nuts without fishing or trying to line it up. I will post more pictures once I get it done.

and as for mounting the cradle in the bed i used 2- 3" x 12" metal strips "used as washers for underside of bed.......

 

I use some Booster Cable Quick Connectors from NAPA #740235 and they sell a plug that fits to.http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=NW_740235_0293961159

 

Those are nice. I wish I had paid attention before ording Warn kit to get to back and interupptor for probably too much money. I will make the one for the front using the excess cable on the winch. One set (pair) of Warn quick connects are like $50 at Northern. Could have done it for half price with your link.

Do you leave your mount in the bed all of time or is it easy to remove? I was thinking that I want to get it out of there when I haul yard waste, stone, mulch, etc. Welding a plate with nuts on underside is probably overkill but will be easier to take it in and out without having to crawl under (or sending my kid) to line up the bolt / nuts everytime.

i never take the hitch cradle out but i do remove the winch and winch cradle from the bed at times when im gathering firewood n such

Big thanks to the OP for a great write up. I pulled one of the flare covers off the bumper too before realizing I didn't need to... This job would have been much harder if you hadn't been so diligent.

 

Did everyone else who installed one of these lose their bolt on recovery point? What was your solution? Losing a recovery point is no bueno...

 

I used a grinder to cut off a small corner of the CBI mount to make space for it to bolt back on. I may have also had to change the orientation of the recovery point somehow, can't quite remember.

Still worth having, even after using the CBI because you may be using the receiver itself for a winch mount and then double the winch line back with a snatch block, and in that case having the original bolt on recovery point as a terminal point for the winch line is a good thing.

 

I did try to rotate the recovery point 180, it looked like it would fit but no. I need to figure something out before the snow starts sticking to the ground. I do tree work, so I keep straps and pulleys on hand at all times, as well as 2 fifty foot 3/8 cable extensions.

 

I flipped mine 180° and Notched the factory pie-tin front "skid" plate so it would fit....
