Magnuson Supercharger Mega Thread for 16+ Tacoma - Unboxing, Install DIY, Dyno Video

A shop installed the SC and tuned the truck. He received all the hardware from the shop post-install but didn't get the tune file from them.

No. That would be bad. As I stated, the whole unit was installed by a shop, who also loaded up the Magnuson tune.

 

At what rpm does it start reading boost? I'm assuming it needs to be under load?

 

Yeah, load/throttle based not RPM. I much prefer a vacuum/boost gauge to boost only.

 

Yup, I can see that now that I've had a chance to see exactly how a boost only gauge works. I may just bite the bullet and buy the vacuum/boost version.

I wrapped up my gauges this afternoon. They didn't turn out too bad.



EDIT: Speedhut told me I can send back my boost gauge and they’ll rebuild it to the vacuum/boost configuration for $40. That sounds like a deal to me. I think I’ll tear it back apart tomorrow.

So, I drove home without a tune and it is fine. You're not going to break anything! But whenever I hear someone say there is a hesitation and that a shop installed the SC, first thing I question is whether or not you did your homework in this case (no offense intended towards you), did you take out the brass nipple in the hose? That limiter was a huge factor in my driving experience.

Side note, I had a large evap code pop up and I finally figured out that it was the hose that Magnuson supplied. It's not entirely tight on the plastic connector! My duh!! moment!

 

Just FYI, I had the very same issue where the truck would misfire and just die. I would have to pull over and shut down and restart to clear the codes and issues. Personally, I think this was related to my large evap code, but it could also be from fuel pump limitations. I'm not on the recall list, so who knows. I haven't had enough time to drive and

 

Loosen the belt tension with a serpentine belt tool, remove the belt from the pulley, undo the 4 bolts. Remove the pulley. Do in the opposite order to install the new one.

I know this has been asked before but has anyone tried drilling out the hole slightly larger rather than removing it completely?

 

Does anyone know what the serpentine belt size is for 3.5 magnesum supercharger thanks

I would caution you guys against removing the brass nipple on the stock tune. High risk for high gear low rpm ping. With the 90mm pulley AFR’s hit 13’s 2700-3200 RPM. No bueno if you’re towing or hill climbing or any sustained high load low rpm situations. Definite no no with the 87mm pulley.

 

were talking the difference between .1 seconds from 0 to full boost and .05seconds. The restrictor has zero effect on AFR past the .1 seconds after the throttle is hit. The engine can easily sustain a 13:1 AFR at full boost for .1 seconds. It definitely doesn’t care about sustained full boost as the bypass is already completely closed under sustained boost.

I’m willing to admit if I’m wrong, but I have several hours of sustained boost while towing. Likely more than anyone else on here and I’ve never had any ping with my restrictor removed.

 

You would think that’s all it does. It actually has a profound effect on AFR in that rpm range specifically. Sustained 13’s. My restrictor is back in. But you do you bro!
