The 4wd ecu has all kinds of interlocks that need satisfying to enable the locker. Easier to build your own controller and push it with a constant voltage rather than the PWM provided by the 4wd ecu.

I’d agree with the ridiculous cost of parts and electrical forkery to get the OE to work, it would probably be easier to go aftermarket. Of course then you’d be able to control it too, in case you don’t know if you were to get it hooked up like OE, it’s 4 low only.

I don't know what interlocks are, so I'm not following you. Is it not feasible to migrate all the needed electronics from one truck to another? I sure have no idea. I'm just curious.

EDIT: oh do you mean that the OEM 4wd computer puts too many restrictions on when the locker can be used (only in 4lo, etc.)?

The 4wd ecu requires certain signals from the skid control ecu and transfer case to enable the locker. To use the 4wd ecu would require spoofing those signals.
A separate controller would give one the benefit of an anytime locker.
Hard pushing the locker has been done before...I linked to it earlier in the thread.

Why would you need to spoof anything if you have all the parts from another truck?

You need signals that aren't there...
OP has a Sport; it's not going to have the same skid control ecu.
Obviously he doesn't have a locker; you need the feedback signal from the locker. I forgot that in my previous post.

By "skid control" do you mean traction control (A-TRAC, MTS, etc)? If those need to be present, I can see a problem.

I don't understand "obviously he doesn't have a locker" as he would be buying one at the junk yard.

    Skid control ecu=brake ecu...
    Vacuum vs electric hydraulic...

I should have said, "he obviously doesn't have a locker currently". I doubt any of that wiring is present on his non-locker equipped Sport.

Yes, but except for perhaps the traction control ECU (is that actually a separate part or is it in the main ECU?), he could grab all the mechanical and electrical parts of the truck at the junk yard, in theory.

Skid control is everything: trac, a-trac, abs, vsc, mts, etc. You do NOT want to deal with this and it's not required to operate the locker. Electrical wise maybe grab the mating connector and then fab up a simple switched power source.
