I started using mobil 1 synthetic about 25 years ago. Its the only i'll ever use in my newer tacoma truck...zero on additives, their not needed. Can't argue the success with this oil. My old tundra is still going strong with over 300k miles.

The best oils according to Project Farm testing are Amsoil and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. The data shows those are “best” and it’s not really up for debate imo. Best heat resistance, best wear protection, best cold flow - go with those if cost permits.

That’s not to say that other synthetic oils are bad or even that far behind the “best.” Some engines might prefer one over others. There are many great oils. Supertech Advanced, Mobil 1 EP, Amazon Basics, LiquiMoly, etc. As long as you use a quality GF6 full synthetic, you’ll be fine.

I personally try to use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum when I can, but also use Supertech Advanced, Rotella Gas Truck (sadly discontinued), and Mobil 1.

Instead of Castrol oil, try Castoreum oil. I heard it keeps tailgaters away.

Oil enthusiasts on Bob the Oil Guy pick the Project Farm guys testing apart, so it’s certainly up for debate there lol.
If you’ve ever seen the extensive tests oils undergo for the certification testing you would understand why.
I think his testing is “good enough” for me even though it doesn’t simulate actual engine temperature conditions and have the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and OEM filter on hand for my next oil change. Recently had the dealer change mine and they use bulk Pennzoil synthetic and don’t even have Toyota oil on hand. They did have Mobile 1 by the quart which was overpriced.

I noticed barrels of mobil1 at the toyota dealer here. Its funny cause they have one of those mobil 1 oil express dealers next door to. If you want valvoline, just go across the street.

Yeah, true. There’s theory, which they tend to discuss a lot, and then there’s empirical data. I’m personally an empiricist. If there are empirical tests that show another oil outperforming PUP or Amsoil, I’d definitely pay attention.

Like I said, though, at that level of quality I would bet a lot depends on the particular engine’s preference. Also beyond a certain point of increasing oil quality, there’s probably effectively little difference in many oil types.

I don’t want to spend a ton of money on boutique oils. I got Mobil 1 EP for ~$26/5qts on Amazon so I bought them out. That’s going to be my fill for the next few years.

This is $29 at Walmart, it’s a 6 quart box (no bottles, it’s bagged) and seems to have all the certifications all the other synthetics have. After one year and 6k, it still looks good.
