Brake Upgrade: StopTech Rotors + TRD Performance Pads

You can't miss with OEM. Just my humble opinion though.

 

Here's the problem with aftermarket shoes...

They're never arc'd correctly. They're close, but not right. With a drum brake system, we want the contact to be in the center 2/3 of the lining...not the top, not the bottom. Eventually things wear in and we have 100% contact, but that's not what we want initially unless it's perfect, which it won't be. If the leading edge of the top shoe contacts first, we'll have excessive bite and that doesn't work. A lot of the friction linings used on aftermarket stuff has pretty low friction levels so it contributes more to taking up space and giving a decent brake pedal than it does stopping the truck. Nobody notices because the rears don't do much most of the time. It's rare to have a parking brake work as good with aftermarket linings in the back than with OEM linings. The cost difference isn't worth taking the chance IMO.

Drums are a problem because they're reverse engineered. When reverse engineering something, holes get toleranced bigger and things that go through holes get toleranced smaller. This is true of the drum center pilot hole. Its rare to find an aftermarket drum that centers on the axle pilot as nicely as an OEM drum. Toyota knows their toleranced dimension on the axle pilot and created their drum prints accordingly. The aftermarket has no idea....so we just measure up a few OE sample drums and call out the smallest dimension +0.1mm

Honestly, not too upset I can get those stoptech rotors discussed in the OP; probably not worth the huge premium over OEM type.

I don't see a lot of gains here....you'd get better performance out of the 4runner 338mm setup for a lot less money, and parts are available anywhere.

Brakes haven’t changed since 2005…. You need a minimum of a 17” wheel tho

 

I wish I had remembered that when I was buying wheels....

 

If you've got your heart set on going bigger....I'd go with that setup in the link. But...if you haven't had problems burning through pads or cracking rotors, the stock sized stuff is fine. Upgrade the pads, fix what's wrong with it, they'll work great.

the Wilwood setup....they're increasing the effective radius by 4mm (basically nothing) and going to a slightly smaller total piston surface area. There's no reason (on paper) why the wilwood stuff should perform even as good as the stock stuff.
