RP-342 cosmoline.

Just did 2 coats last weekend of PB Blaster Surface Shield. It isn't drying at all. It is staying oily. Not sure if that is good or not? Thoughts? Do I wipe it off and start over?

New member here, shopping for a used Tacoma for my 16yo son and joined to learn about them.

I've got a '22 F-250 (1yr old with 12k miles) and decided to treat with CRC 6026 after reading reviews on here and other sites. I started spraying yesterday evening and so far have only sprayed the inner facing side of the frame rails, cross members, front axle and steering components. When I first applied the product it had an OD green to bronze looking tint. It seems to have lost some of that tint from drying overnight.

Since the F-250 sits tall and displays a lot of the undercarriage, I was very hesitant to spray the outer facing sides of the frame rail and rear axle. Last thing I want is a white truck with an OD green or bronze looking frame showing. The RP-342 BLACK peaks my interest for those areas, and I may get a can or two of it to try yet.
Additionally, since so much of the frame and undercarriage is visable from just walking around the truck, when I wash my truck I spray the frame, undercarrige and fender wells with Simple Green and pressure wash it off, even use a wash sponge on the plastic fender well liners and mudflaps (OCD). I like the underside to be as clean as the body.



All the black parts you can see in this pic were sprayed - except the radius arms and outer facing side of the frame rails.
The drips on the sway bar are water, from washing the truck about 30min before the pic.



The shocks, crossmembers, spare tire plate, and iner facing side of frame rails were sprayed. I've not sprayed the rear axle yet.

I've decided to drive the truck a couple weeks and see how much dust / dirt / grime the sparyed parts collect, and how easily they wash clean before spraying parts that are noticable from walking around the truck.

Also wanted to post here and ask those who have used CRC 6026 (or the RP-342 BLACK):
- how bad either holds dust / dirt / grime?
- how easily does the dust / dirt / grime wash off?

I seen pics in the Rust Veto - 342 thread with very filthy, nasty looking undercarriage, but that's a different product. DO NOT want. A clean, new looking undercarriage is a hard requirement.

Just an update on my 2020 tacoma I did with rp-342 cosmoline over 3 years ago, it's still 99% all in tack. Only very minor touchups around the wheel well area where it gets high abrasion from water spray off the tires. No rust forming anywhere. This is the longest lasting rust inhibitor I've used. I used amber rp-342, black wasn't available at the time. On another note with the black, I've been told the black for some weird reason develops cracks over time in the coating which imo, isn't good. Idk, if it was a reaction with whatever was left on the chassis, or there is some real problem with it, after a couple years.

 

Im about to do a coat myself. Where should I make an emphasis not to spray? Definitely not near the exhaust. But should I put a coat on the bottom on the transmission and such?

I just crawled underneath and went to town. Thought it turned out nice. No discoloration and not very tacky at all. Maybe I missed spots IDK, but happy. Used over 5 cans.

Don't get inside the brake backing plates, outer only. I kept mine off anything aluminum, composite like the bed, plastic/rubber hoses, and wires. I called cosmoline, even though they claimed its safe to overspray on those item, I didn't.

 

Do you have an current pics?

How bad does holds dust / dirt / grime and how easy does it wash clean?

Pics I think are right after I was hitting with second coat. It will flow around and even itself out and fill some voids. I’d follow suggestions in that thread. Only thing I will say is do it in a well ventilated area, wear a mask and safety glasses. Maybe gloves. And let it sit a couple hours. It was a perfect June for me to do it outside. No wind at all and warm. It will drip but I have a stone driveway. I didn’t get that messy. In second pic you can actually still see a factory mark on the frame. On anything silver it will turn it clear brassy color. And I have a white truck and didn’t notice any overspray on the paint anywhere. It’s not that tacky once dry. I haven’t looked lately to see any dust or dirt

 

How long do you guys let it sit before you drive it after undercoating?

 

Idk how long it absolutely has to sit. At least a couple hours. I put some on and it sat overnight. Then I had to drive to airport and it sat 2 1/2 weeks. Came home and finished coating and it sat overnight again. I think couple 3-4 hrs should be fine.

My last coat was done 30 June. I just put my fingers around the frame. It’s like it has a very fine dust on it. But it’s not like it’s glued to it or it has fine particles stuck to it and feels like sandpaper like you’re thinking the stones will stick. It’s not that sticky. My fingers almost look like you touched charcoal. Fine grey dust.

Cosmoline doesn’t wash off easily. Ask anyone that had a gun shipped to them packed with cosmoline in the barrel. It stays on like everyone has already noted.

Note I also put it right on a brand new squeaky clean truck and underside. If your truck is full of dirt from use you gotta get it off first. IDK what you’d do if you already had rust. People smarter than me can answer that.

 

Thanks! Yeah, Ill let it sit overnight. I was wondering if it was 24 hours. I have 600 miles on it so I will still clean it, but there shouldn't be a whole lot there. For peace of mind.

 

BTW it’s rained so little here since I got it that I haven’t even driven this thing in the rain. I hand washed it 3 times. I’ve barely had to use the wipers to date. So the underside has barely seen water, maybe wet road after rain. I’m up to 2550 miles. First application was ~150 miles, second was before 500 miles. Our winters will test it!

 

No pics, but after 3 years it does pickup a light coating of dirt making the frame look grayish. Reminds me of looking at any other vehicle chassis when they are dirty, except you know you have a protective coating. I don't have a habit of seeing how clean the underside of my truck is, or how it must be. I just want to know it's protected from excessive rusting. Only time I might hose off the excessive mud is in the spring when the frost comes out of the dirt roads here. When I drive in the rain, the wet roads do the job.
You do 2 good coats of this stuff, it lasts forever.

 

So i just hit my truck with an undercoat and 2 hours later it decided to rain after it said it wouldn’t rain when I started. Am I boned? Got about 2 hours to dry b4 the rain

 

This stuff will dry within an hour if in 90 degree heat, I can attest to that. I did my 2nd coat right after. I definitely wouldn't apply the 2nd coat till the chassis is good, and dry from any rain.

Can some one tell me how this holds up compared to fluid film. I used FF last year and it was solid on spots not often getting snow/ water thrown at it. Was going to do some touch up this year with this stuff.

 

My experience with Fluid Film is that it lasts no more than a year. I don't live in the "rust belt" but I do live in Salt Lake City Utah and they liberally use rock salt, salt brine, and a chemical pre storm solution that is likely more aggressive than the first two. I switched to Cosmoline a few years ago in the CRC variant. My '22 was coated with 8 cans shortly after receiving it and appears to have lost nothing after 12 months and several undercarriage pressure washings at the handheld car wash. I pretty much sprayed everything with 2-3 coats and will get back underneath in Oct or Nov and hit things again in the high wear areas that are subjected to direct salty spray.

Fluid film and the other oily products are great for closed cavities when used in conjunction with a long spray tube with a 360 degree tip. For exposed areas I much prefer a waxy product.
