Fog Lamps Help

Ok when I first started reading all the lighting threads I thought installing HID fog lights would be easy put I am confused on a few things. My truck is 4 cylinder so it didnt come with any fog lights. All the HID lights I can find just seem to be upgrades meaning you have to some type of bulb already installed. Is this correct there is no HID LIGHT with lens, bulb, wiring and switch already made that I can just install? Or do I have to order some stock halogen kit that is everything like PIAA and just upgrade it? ( piaa is just an example of something non HID that seems to be all there) If someone could please fill in this gap for me I it would be much appreciated. I have looked at all the threads but most of the info was for people just uprading there fogs.

Read that thread, there's some good info in there. You can get fully contained fog light kits, but most of the HID kits you'll find will be plug and play meaning you need to have an existing housing to upgrade. Keep your eyes out on here or ebay, you can find complete fog light systems with the wiring, switch and lights. If you get the stock system, it'd be cheaper than a PIAA system, then upgrade it with an HID kit.

You can put something like PIAA 510's in the stock fog light locations. They're still a halogen kit but they're pretty bright!

Thank you so much for the clarifying everything, I was just confused why I was having trouble finding an HID Kit with housing, lens ,bulb and everything. I think I might just GO PIAA, probaly has the the best fit it should just slide right in ( i hope)

 

PIAA does make a kit specifically for the Tacoma. It uses the 540 I believe but it doesn't have a great finish. The lights are slightly larger than the opening so they stick out slightly but it's a sure fit with their mounting kit. I'm not sure how much is required to make the 510's mount up but, after asking a few who have done it, have heard it was fairly uninvolved.

 

Thanks for the help now I just need to research the difference between and two and see which one would fit better. I just dont want the bumber all scratched up from trying to install lights. Thank you for all your help!

 

i have a 4banger that didnt come with fogs so i had to find some, luckly my buddy was getting an off road bumper and didnt need his fogs so he gave them to me. he had already up graded to hids.

the only thing i have to say is that wiring is kinda a bitch, i didnt go through the fuse box because it would have been alot of work so i just ghetto rigged it and wireed it straight to the battery its been working well for the past 6 months for so. so i have the stock fogs and stock switch but i technically have the fog light anytime mod so i have to remember to turn them off all the time haha.

also the last thing is if you plan on upgrading to hids in the fogs be prepared to get flashed more if you already have hids in your driving lights. i have 6k in the driving and 8k in the fogs and i get flashed a few times a week just something to warn you about.

Right now sierrahsky is trying to get a toyota OEM group buy together and he might be getting fogs and switches. There is a list of items that he could get and will be making a group buy for the top 5 items.

I too am in the same boat with no fogs on my base 4 banger. Maybe if he offers a good price on them we can go the HID route for less than you'd expect.

So vote for fogs so we don't have to cringe anymore when a Tacoma drives past us with fog lights.

Thank for the information my truck is 2011 all stock. My headlights are still sock, My first purchase was the intermittent wiper stalk now I am working on the fog lights. I appreciate all the help you guys offer on this site!

Yup, but did you see that he might still be able to get some OEM parts so even if the fogs and switch don't make the top 5. We still have a chance by PM'ing him the part numbers and he'll get back Monday or Tuesday.

 

Do you know the part Number's for the Fogs? I might go this route then change to HID's?

I PM'd a member on here asking the same thing and here is the response that I got:

A trip to Lowes/Home depot will get the job done. you need a longer bolt and a series of nuts and washers to hold it all together. once you get the stock fog light out of the bumper and see how it is mounted the procedure is pretty much a nobrainer... No trimming necessary, I had the 510 Ion crystal fogs in there and to be honest it did not work well. the way they sit in the bumper and the design of the bumper do not allow for the fog light beam to project well. The driving or ATP beam pattern would better suit this retrofit.

ohh, One other area of concern is heat build up. The Piaa's get warm, not hot enough to cause damage but do not go through the carwash with them on and located in this retrofit. I shattered the lens on mine.

Thanks for the info WHO DAT but I already already ordered the PIAA 510 and I noticed some people on the site had them installed. I was just looking for some tips on how to install them on my truck.

 

My Fogs came in the mail today going to try and install them tomorrow!

 

I am working on mounting my lights and there is pretty large gap between the lights and factory holes. Its large enough you can see the whole inside of the housing. Anyone have any idea's to help make this a little cleaner? If I put the guard on it takes care of the gap but I cant get the light to fit into the hole all the way. So I might just leave the guard on, it looks a lot better than seeing the hole inside of the hole. Any help would be appreciated.

 

One option would be leave the guard on as you said, otherwise, a little air flow wouldn't be all bad since those lights do heat up pretty good.
