Low boost with methanol injection (~6-8psi): Supercharger (+50-100HP) mostly bolt on with supporting mods
Medium boost with Intercooler (up to 16psi): Turbocharger (+100-250HP) but a lot more work and you'll want a full aftermarket ECU like the Haltech 2500

Both end up costing similar, but turbo will be more labor and tuning

High boost with intercooler (16psi+): turbocharger & complete rebuild of engine required and manual transmission recommended.

Assuming you do everything correctly and don't cut corners:

Turbo = cheaper dollar/horsepower ratio, can easily achieve more power than supercharger, better for going fast.

Supercharger = pretty expensive, not good dollar/horsepower ratio, easy to install, better for rock crawling.

Supercharger is expensive but can be installed in an afternoon and will run well over 100k without any issues.
Supercharger you will not hurt the motor with boost,

turbo there is no plug and play kits available that fit perfectly and are not smog legal
More power potential but a lot easier to blow up the motor.

all depends on what you want and how mechanically inclined you are,

turbo you get more boost and so you probably will need ARP head studs installed for long term, the stock head bolts are like 30 pounds, arp bolts are 80 pounds of torque

This bit is misinformation. Stock head bolts are TTY and are possibly carrying the most torque on my whole truck aside from the front CV axle nuts

I'd start with whats the goal? Then I'd go to whats the budget? Then I'd decide who's doing the work? Then I'd go back to the budget. Then I'd start considering which better achieves my goal/budget.

For me, it'd unfortunately be neither.

Personally, I wouldn’t start there. The first and foremost question will be, do OP resides in a SMOG emission state. From there, OP can decide which route to go with. Personally, SC is sufficient on our little truck. I owned both SC (C30A, S52, 5VZ) and turbo (1JZ, 2JZ, B18, K24) engines, making power from 4-800hp+ and can say SC require less maintenance vs turbo. They’re tuned on e85 with AEM, Haltech, Hondata management with 8-1200cc injectors.

Supercharge: simple and easy installation. Add meth injection and most of the issue will be eliminated. Provide decent amount of power between 6-12psi

Turbo: complicated installation and not a drop and go setup. Requires some elbow grease and knowledge to get going. Provide good amount of power, depending on boost.

Heck, a buddy had an all motor ITB K motor making 320ish HP and spanking turbo motor making 400HP. Lol

We're saying the same thing friend. "Retaining SMOG compliance" would fall under 'whats the goal'. Determine the things that matter most first. Evaluate the budget. Make a decision.

Thats okay, I like to argue with people just to argue too sometimes :boink:
Also, where's the build thread on the turbo 1jz you mentioned? If only I was worthy enough for a soarer/chaser build:bowdown:

No thread for any of my built. 1JZ single turbo, with 2 fuel map (91 & e85) making 520 to the wheel in a classic 70 Toyota.
