Question about wheels on 4th gen offset….

I’m looking at getting wheels and I want some ‘poke’. I had a set of rough country 87 wheels in my cart about to buy but decided I’d ask them (rough country) through their help email.
The guy tells me that I HAVE to go positive offset on these new 4th gen trucks with an 18’’ wheel?

what? That doesn’t make sense. I asked him if a zero offset would work and he comes back with a simple “no it won’t, that’s why we use +18 on our builds.

No further explanation or anything! Then I look on their website (Rough Country) under customer builds and there they are! 0 offset on one build -18 offset on another? Now I’m confused!

So I joined the great forum here because looking at some builds here I see several people have indeed went with 0 up to -25 on their builds. So what am I missing?
Also, I having a rough country 3.5’’ Lift installed in the up coming weeks. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How much poke are you looking to achieve? 285/70/17 tire size on my zero offset wheels pokes about 2 and a quarter inches.

 

Everything i know says a 0 is equivalent to a -38 on the 4th gen. I think stock offset was +55 or so

 

That’s about what I’m looking for. I’d ideally like one tread band out past the fender flare.

Thank you for the link to your build! Your off road had 18” wheels OEM correct? Going to 17 didn’t hurt anything I’m guessing?

 

Here is +25 with 285/70R17

 

I know that -10 offset on the 4th gen Tacoma's is equivalent to -38 offset on the 3rd gen Tacoma's.

start at page 5, dont pay attention to the black powder coated sport wheels...
theres a few examples of 285 70 17's on +25mm offset within my thread...

Your guess is correct. No issues with 17” wheels. I wanted beefier tires so I went with 17” instead of 18”. Also finding tires with 17” is easier.

 

I thought i saw an issue with 17's collecting mud inside the wheel and shredding the rear brake hose?

I think those were 2024 models. Mine is a 2025

 

I see they issued a recall on it now should post a picture of how yours looks id be curious on the redesign as that initial set up was a joke.

I’ve been in some ugly stuff a couple times and the brake line survived. TSB say it MAY happen. New brake lines should be available this summer?

That hose routing is what terrifies me and thats what I havnt seen any updated routing yet. Thst wouldn't survive a winter wheeling trip down here much less our heavy clay that likes to build up inside a wheel. Wish I still had pictures of how bad mine were last year.

 

Note that the amount of poke will depend on what wheel flare you also have. With that said:
OEM 18" Limited Bright Chrome = 18x7.5, 6x139.7, 55mm offset, 95.1mm bore
OEM 18" TRD Flat Black = 18x8, 6x139.7, 45mm offset, 95.1mm bore
OEM 18" Trailhunter Wheel: Flat Bronze = 18x18.5, 6x139.7, 20mm offset, 95.1mm bore

The Trailhunter has wider factory flares though.
