Again, dont let them paint anything but the one panel. Less then a year old they should have no problems matching the paint.

I'm sorry but where are you guys getting this information that the bedside is bolt on. I never heard anything about it and I haven't really looked but it shouldn't be bolt on. It should be spot welded on like most other bedsides. This is a huge difference on labour. Every spot weld has to be drilled out just to remove the box side. I'll take a look at my truck this morning but I'm pretty sure Toyota didn't start simply bolting on their boxsides

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
It is a 4x4, will get pics of it when I go home this weekend. It is a damn good little truck, we have literally put that poor thing through hell! It is still running strong though but smokes quite a lot.

Agreed, the thing was indestructible, sold it for some speed (a RC V8 5spd dakota).

Last time I checked they didn't spot weld steel to plastic, which our beds are made of (sheet molding compound - SMC)...

From BTnewman's thread (bought a salvage truck for fixer-up):

Is there some sort of change up between years or countries then? Cause I double checked this morning and mine is metal and is definitely spot welded on..

^Nope, all 2nd. Gen. Tacomas (2005-2012) use SMC bed. Show us a photo of the spot weld. You are probably looking at the wrong place.

Will do after work. Just went outside and put a magnet on my box. Pretty sure that means my boxside is metal

pics as requested. i appologise for the poor quality, taken with my phone.

    first pic - magnet[IMG]

second pic - magnet on boxside[IMG]

third pic - spot weld on box side between box and cab[IMG]

fourth and final pic - box side spot weld by tail lights[IMG]

this is why I'm led to believe that there has to be some sort of difference between years or countries or something

Edit: Do you have a link to that btnewman thread where he pulls the box sides off? interested to see how they were attached

You are putting the magnet on the steel bed side, not the bed. That folded and spot-welded corner comes off with the bed side, too.

Just click through on that photo to get at Btnewman's gallery, which shows a few other angles, for example:

Haha I know that's why I've been saying the boxside is metal, because it is. I'm now unclear on which part you are calling smc, are you talking about the bed liner? I'm trying to look through his photos on my phone but can't see a whole lot with this thing. Will have to be one of those things I look at later tonight.

EDIT: just looked into it elsewhere and you are correct, the bed is smc. This I didn't know, but I was talking about the bedside/boxside panel which is metal. In my experience we've always only changed these outer skins. It I can see changing the whole boxside would be easier. Depending on price of course and wether or not the inner, outer and all reinforcements already come welded together. It's true you do learn something new everyday!

Edit: I see you edited and figured it out :p

The metal bedside, gets bolted to the SMC bed. There is no bedliner in the second gens... the entire bed is actually made of the SMC material.

Haha definitely did. Turns out you can't by thy outer panel separately to my knowledge. Looks like just that hole assembly. And my pricing shows a bit UBS $1200 for it and I think it said something like 5 hours labour.
