    Hey guys,

I am looking for a simple recovery kit in anticipation of doing a lot of driving on the beach this summer. I don't intend to do much wheeling in deep mud or off road but just want to have the right gear if I myself get stuck or if i pass a stuck vehicle on the beach and can help out. I know i need a recovery strap and a receiver shackle bracket and d shackle but they all seem pretty expensive and I don't know which load ratings are overkill based on how much my truck can actually tow anyway. I have a '03 v6 4x4 manual sr5 tacoma.

So in short I guess i'm being cheap, but want to be cheap safely and have the proper gear in case I get stuck while i'm driving on the beach this summer. Hopefully I wont need to use them much at all. Any suggestions on specific brands and models of straps and shackles would be appreciated. I know i should not get stuck driving on the beach with 4x4, but it can happen an I want to be prepared and be able to help out a fellow driver.

    Thanks

Go to Masterpull.com , look at the "Super-Yanker" straps. Should do you well. I just dropped the coin, and bought a Recovery kit from Warn.

Lots of good info around, you seem to already have a little knowledge..check out some of these threads and see if they can help. Biggest thing to remember on sand is to air down your tires! (15lbs is reasonable) You have a 4x4 so you should be fine on sand as long as you don't turn too sharply and keep up momentum, but if you start to feel like you are loosing traction or start sinking and speeding up makes your tires spin then stop and try digging out the fronts of the tires and crawling out in 4lo.

i dont think theres such a thing as overkill when it comes to recovery gear...i have no idea what my straps limit is...but my shackles have a 7T wll which is way stronger than i hope i ever need..but extra strength to keep stuff from breaking is always good!

forgive my inexperience but if the max towing capacity of my v6 tacoma says its 3500lbs in the manual then why would i need straps rated far above that and what is it safe to actually pull out when stuck? I'm probably missing something here.

Thats just the safe trailer towing wieght in regards to braking etc.

the forces on a tow strap can reach tension way above that.
even basic "tow straps" (NOT recovery) are usually rated around 9500lbs breaking strenght.

It is recommended that the minimum breaking strength of the strap should be between 2 and 3
times the vehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM);and

The strap must be suited to the GVM of the lighter of the two vehicles used in the recovery

    process.

The difference is towing a consistent weight for an extended period of time and yanking a stuck vehicle out of a hole...yanking is going to apply force quickly on the strap and vehicle, totally different than towing. Here is an example of what strength would be used to recover certain vehs.
    1-inch SuperStrap: 10,000 lb. Capacity
    Material: 1-inch Unique Nylon Weave
    Available Lengths: 15-, 20-, 25-, 50-feet
Recommended Vehicle Uses for 1-inch SuperStrap:
    Small/Midsize Pickups
    Sand Cars/Dune Buggies
    Cars/Vans (under 7,000lbs)
    Hot Rods
    Sports Cars
    Rally Cars
    Motorcycles
    ATVs
    Golf/Utility Carts

    2-inch Big Daddy: 20,000 lb. Capacity</SPAN>
    Material: 2 Unique Nylon Weave
    Available Lengths: 20-, 25-, 30-, 50-feet
Recommended Vehicle Uses for 2 Big Daddy SuperStrap:
    -Mid-Size/Large Pickups
    -Large Vans (over 7,000lbs.)
    -Midsize Delivery Trucks
    -Tow Vehicles (Pick-ups with Trailers)
    -RVs/Motor Homes
    -Small Tractors

Your V6 has a tow capacity of 3500lbs without the tow package ie oil/trans cooler, bigger battery & alternator, but the engine is capable of pulling 6500lbs.

Now if you should try to recover a vehicle bigger than yours on the beach, depends on a few things, but mainly how stuck are they and is trying to help them going to get you stuck? I drive at the sand dunes frequently, pretty similar to the beach and I wouldn't attempt to recover anything much bigger than my truck, but I have seen a Taco recover a full sized truck and that was also using the above tips I mentioned, air down and dig out.

Go with a 10,000lb strap for $20-30 and a receiver shackle for $20-30 and you will be fine.

Going way over what you think you need is always a good idea. You don't want that cable to snap back and slice someone in half... it can happen with these forces. Always ensure there's no damage to the cable/strap prior to using it too...
