Sound Deadening "Diminishing Returns"

Hello TW,


Sound deadening is an essential portion to a great sounding audio system.
There are several excellent posts covering the rhyme or reason to it.

My question is while the doors and back wall are a must, what about the
roof and/or floor, should you or shouldn't you?

Has anyone here had an experience hearing a system with or without the
roof/floor deadened? I have been told that you may or may not be getting
diminishing returns from doing the floor/roof.

What do you guys think, yes or no?

Please explain your answer.

 

I did NOT deaden and I regret it. It may also be to POD baffles crutchfield sent, but I am getting some bad rattle from my rear. I am trying to find some power window/lock kits to do all the work in one day but I regret not making the most of my install. when I get some new baffles I'm going to deaden just so I dont have to go into my doors again if it is the issue

 

there i go responding without fully reading. I think the floors and roof is way overkill. unless you plan to charge admission for a theatre experience. But hey, to each their own.

I want to do it, but I don't want to do it.

My thinking is you might cut down on noise from the weather,
and the road. Who knows? Trying to get a feel for others thoughts.

Yeah I'm just pissed I didn't do it originally. I got the speakers for Xmas and wanted to get it done before I went back to college. gaaah oh well gives me something to tinker with!

 

I think the roof is a good move. It is hollow an tinny sounding and deadening should reduce this quite a bit. I get annoyed with how loud the rain sounds on the roof.

 

In the Tacoma I would recommend the doors and back wall first followed by the roof then lastly the floor. Although there is a benefit of of using "mat" deadener on the floor but the combination of foam and mat in this area will yield the highest return. Depending on your budget, if both is not affordable I would do the foam on the floor before the mat. My choice would be this product. Now what my post is leading to, the combination of the two will yield maximum results.

Agreed. I put fatmat in my Tacomas doors, back wall, and the floor. It was definitly worth the time and money to put it in the floor. At least just put it in the driver and passenger front and you'll be amazed how much of the road noise is gone from the front wheels!

 

I have second skin. I did damplifier pro on the back wall, floor and all four doors. I also put luxury liner pro in the doors and on the floor.

It's pretty hard for me to judge the effectiveness since it was a gradual process. At first, I didn't "notice" a difference. Sounded a little different, but not a ton. However, a few weeks later, I got in a truck without it and immediately noticed the difference!

Is it worth the money I invested in it (>$800)? That's debatable. However, I don't know that I would have gotten this same thing out of a different product for a lower price.

I haven't done the roof yet, but I have enough left over material to do it. I just haven't. I may one day if I get bored...

 

Yup , I know what your talking about. Currently I only one of the rear doors done and just driving there is a huge difference between the deadened door and the non deadened rear door. Now there are other products out there but I have found the Second Skin to be the most effective. I posted a video on this forum "comparing" SS against another product. the roof and floor. I totally forgot about the discount for TW members.

What do you guys recommend? Are the RAAMaudio products top notch?
I noticed that you guys have linked some other products.

For those that have deadened the roof of their Tacomas, was it difficult?
Did you run into any snags? any tips?

I haven't used the RAAM stuff personally. But from all the research I did before doing mine, you'll get superior performance out of Second Skin. However, it's more expensive, but not quite as much as Dynamat.

So, it really depends on your budget...

 

I should have never gotten involved in this thread because now I am seeing the benefits of doing (at least) my roof much more clearly. I noticed driving today that I can still hear a lot of wind through my roof, something I havn't noticed since I first posted here. Only problem is deadening materials are expensive and I know there are no short cuts with it. I stopped by my local circuit city looking praying for a deal on dynamat but it already kicked the bucket for good. Anyone have any suggestions for doing this on a limited budget? I have not deadened anything yet, but I am going to be going into my doors to put on better baffles and maybe install some power windows.

 

A 20ft "trunk" pack of Second Skin will set you back less than $100, well worth it in my opinion.

 

+1. If you just do the dampener, then I would suggest Second SKin. It's the addition of luxury liner pro that made mine so expensive...
