I guess it also depends on what you're comfortable/trained to use. A large professional kit wouldn't be of much help if you don't have First Aid or EMT training.

Thanks guys. I'll look into building my own I think. I have some sports med. training from school, but haven't used it much in the past couple years. Maybe I'll look into some training as well.

During the power outage last year in San Diego, the local cell repeaters lasted about 3 hours, while the bigger master towers stayed up. So it would all depend on your AO.

Also keep those sites in mind as a shtf fuel source if you have (or acquire) a diesel. Some are propane and I even have a site than runs on hydrogen but most are diesel gen sets with 500-800 gallon tanks. Most are made from reinforced concrete and have a good view with an easily defensible perimeter. For a temporary bug out camp site cell sites would be hard to beat.

From the store? You should be able to source your salt, sugar and crisco. Drop $9 for a set of mason jars and pack them with the salt and sugar - they'll be good for 30 years or more. Keep the crisco in the original can - it's good for at least 10. For longer-term storage of bulk food you need to consider rice or whole wheat along with #10 cans or mylar-lined food grade buckets. Oxygen absorbers or the dry ice method should be used or you'll have beetles in your food within a year or two.

Or, you can take the approach that ouyin2000 has and just buy in bulk and then rotate. It's a great approach if you cook with those ingredients a lot. That means you have to be using the bulk foods though, otherwise you'll have a lot of waste. I prefer to stock up on long-term foods that don't need rotation. That way I don't have to even think about or manage it - it's just there if/when I need it. I have beand, rice, potato pearls and oats put up, along with crisco, salt and sugar. I'd like to get into wheat berries to make flour but then you need a mill and I think you really need to be using that stuff constantly to make a mill worthwhile.

So bi-mart had a sale on the mountain food 72 hour kit for $35, so I figured we would try it out. I had the Chili Mac for lunch today, and it's ok with enough hot sauce. The bad part about them is the need to purify/boil water then pour it in the dehydrated food pouch. For something to have in the truck they would work, but no nearly as easy as MRE's. I think I'll stick to military MRE's for food on the go, as much as I hate them. I once went 59 days without a shower eating nothing but misteries and acquired a lifelong hatred for them, lol.

Okay, a functioning vehicle is obviously quite useful in any survival situation. According to a 2010 Oak Ridge National Laboratory report, the best tactic for dealing with an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), short of making electrical components resistant (not easily done in a vehicle after manufacture), is to have spare parts on hand for vulnerable electronic components.

What are the vulnerable electronic components on a modern Tacoma and what's the best way of storing the spare parts to ensure survival?

All four ECU's, the fuse boxes, and all sensors. You can store stuff in a faraday cage (grounded metal gun safe works). It won't matter though, you still need a trip to the dealer to get the new ecu flashed before it will run. You are far better off getting an old mechanical fuel pump manual trans diesel you can push start. Just get a horse to be safe, lol.

There is a post in the mod forum, where a guy mounted a couple of 50 cal cans in the bed of the truck with bolts. I have not been able to find it in the 500 pages of the mod forum, but they are pretty cool, and you can throw a padlock on them to keep them secure. They use large washers to mount to the rail system, so you are not drilling holes in the truck. Just an idea. You could still haul the bike, and have storage in the bed. Depending where you mounted them, you could use a 20mm bulk can, but might want to use more than 2 bolts to mount it, it would be pretty heavy.
    :)

There has to be a way of getting the Tacoma to run afterwards. Any way to get that done to a second unit for storage until needed later? For example, installing, flashing, and then removing for storage (with the original reinstalled).

No way your gonna EMP proof your taco unless you store it in a faraday cage and leave it parked there 24/7 and wait for the blast. there are already a few threads on this. please take any EMP talk to those.

Yes, sir. Wasn't aware this was unrelated to survivalists utilizing their truck. I'll take my questions elsewhere.
