PlasmaGlow Firestorm Install

Hi Guys, Just traded 05 Tacoma 4dr long bed TRD Sport for 2012 same truck. I was going to install a Firestorm by PlasmaGlow and wondered if anyone has hard wired one of these up. Just looking for any hints to make install go easier. Thanks, Steve

Just installed the PlasmaGlow Firestorm on the 2012 Tacoma and it went well. Took about 2 hours. End product looks good. If you want to see what it looks like check out You Tube videos for PlasmaGlow Firestorm.
If anyone needs to know, from the truck side plug on the left tail light, Left turn Yellow; Tail Green; Brake Blue; Reverse Red; Ground white w/Black stripe; On the right tail light plug, Right turn Blue with white stripe. I took the 12vdc constant with key on from the trailer plug Black wire. Found best price on Amazon for $97. w free shipping.

Unlike other lightbars that might cover the spare tire access hole, this is 2 pieces which mount on either side of the hole. It comes in either the amber or red turn signals and can be configured to be running lights also with a free kit from PlasmaGlow. Instruction for that application are included. I also installed BlingLights mirror turn signal. Thanks for posting the You Tube videos, I am an analog guy in a digital world! This is a pic on the 2012 Tacoma with the parking lights on. I hardwired them in and the install was easy. The 48" lights come in two halfs, and thats perfect for keeping access to the spare tire lock hole.

 

Ordered mine last nite from Amazon. Been thinkin' 'bout it for a while.
Have been all over PlasmaGlow's site and missed anything for free.
Didn't see it in any instructions either.
Could you elaborate or post a link.
My impression was that the running lights just hard wired to parking/tail lights.
I got the Amber Signals.
Plan to feed the running lights thru a switch in the Cab, to use only in fog (or turn the Brake Lights on constantly in fog).
Got the FireStorm for the Back-Up lights, though I just installed the 886 Back-Up Light Mod today.

The free running light kit appears to be obsolete now. The newest iteration of the FireStorm integrates that function now. The way to tell is the BROWN wire. If it has one = no kit required. If it DOES NOT have one = you need the kit. Newest instructions are here.

[FONT=&quot]1. For those with a backup camera in the tailgate, you need to remove the wiring harness for it before you remove the tailgate. The owner’s manual has detailed instructions on how to do this and for removal of the tailgate also. Personally, I found removing the wiring retainer at the back of the bed easier with the tailgate opened than with it closed.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]2. You will definitely need to remove the tailgate to mount the light bars unless you are extremely good at working in tight places.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]3. I found a little excess caulking squeezed out at the outside ends of the installation area for the bars. This kept the bars from lying flat. The caulking can be trimmed away very easily with an Exacto knife or pocketknife. Because the caulking is painted over, it may have the appearance of a weld.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]4. I like to use rubbing alcohol to clean the mounting surface because it's very good at cutting through grease and oil and will dry quickly without leaving a residue.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]5. On the 2005 through 2012 model Tacomas, when removing the taillight units to access the wiring, only the one very top and one very bottom bolts need to be removed. Then pull straight back on the taillight unit firmly.[/FONT]

If you're unsure which wire is the running light wire and which is the brake light, you can borrow a straight pin from your wife's sewing kit and pierce one wire with it, being sure not to pierce any other wire in the process. Turn on the headlights. Then with a multimeter, touch the red lead to the pin and the black lead to ground with the multimeter set to read ohms. If you get a reading on the multimeter, you have found the running lights lead. If you get no reading then you're on the brake lights lead.

OP. do you find the light bar helps or hinders the reverse camera when backing up? or does it make no difference at all. Also have you found any problems with adding the addional electrical load of towing a trailer because of hard wireing the light bar?

Hi, I found it helped a little with the back up camera, and then I added 400 lumen LED reverse light bulbs and saw a good improvement in camera picture. I have an ATV trailer, but have not hooked it up to the truck yet, so I cant answer that question. I dont believe there will be any problem. I liked the hard wire approach for a nice clean install and easy access to trailer plug. I have seen 4 wire trailer plug pig tails that allow a couple of items to be plugged in to the trailer plug.
