Replacing the fuel filter

2004 with 135k and I'm looking to replace the fuel filter. Should I go with OEM or does anyone have a rec on an aftermarket?

I have used the luber finer ones from autozone without any problems. One work of advice......spray fitting with some pb blaster and use line wrenches. Regular wrenches have a tendency to strip the nuts.

 

You don't mention whether you've got a 4- or 6-cyl engine which, IIRC, does vary the parts required and specifics of the job. There's info on several options here. (I went with a

$22 WIX 33319 Fuel (Complete In-Line) Filter, Pack of 1

WIX 33319 for my V6.)

This is is good advice! The filters need to be pretty tight to prevent leaks, so it might take some "elbow grease" to remove the old one and be very careful not to cross-thread the fittings when installing the new one.

Tacomaman06-- can you explain further what pb blaster is?

 

Pb blaster is basically a better form of wd40..........a good lubricant. Helps break rusted parts free easier.

 

Pb blaster is a penetrating spray solution. It has many uses, one being to help loosen the nuts holding the filter to the lines. A high quality penetrating solution is a must when working on good ol' 1st Gens.

Yeah man......been busy as hell though.

 

Has anyone put any type of sealant on the threads in the line? My knowledge is somewhat limited in regards of fuel line/type of compound in seal not meshing.

Like I would assume the typical Teflon-plumbers tape would not work, but is there a similar product for fuel lines?

 

This is the fuel that came out of my fuel filter that to my knowledge had never been replaced by previous owner. You can literally see SAND AND DIRT sloshing around in it. BAD. My mpg has increased slightly since replacing and same with the engine's idling.

 

no! never put anything on fuel line connections, they are designed to seal as a dry fit only and if you put something on it it could cause it to leak as strange as that sounds.

I use the wix filters from autozone and they look identical to OEM and work great, I think it was around $16 with new washer seals but I have the 4 cylinder so the filters are different numbers because the fuel lines are a little bigger on the v6

 

EDIT: GEEZE-us. I just saw the date on that PB blaster post. Sheesh. Nevermind. Nothing to see here. Gotta love the bumps!

Thats probably how mine looks. Possibly worse. Was it a difficult job?

 

on the v6 its super easy, its right under the drivers seat bolted to the frame rail

 

I did this recently on my V6. PB blaster is your friend. Wix filter, took about 45 mins, there's a good "how to" in the sticky list of DIYs. Line wrench helps but not necessary. I had a small leak after test driving but just loosened the fittings and re-tightened and it was fine.
