if you plan on going 2.5 up front plan on getting ucas to correct caster setting or it will drive all twitchy on uneven surfaces and wander but tires won't wear. it is just annoying for the most part. if you get a 1.5 aal then it'll be half inch higher out back which is basically level. .85 or 1.75 is the most you can go and still have decent caster without getting ucas. if you go .85 up front then you can get caster right and still be bit over half inch higher out back without doing aal. It will ride better too without the extra preload up front. Depends on what you wanna do tire and wheelwise.

I'm not an expert on lifts but that would be a 2.5" lift in the front and 1" in the rear.

I am not 100% sure but I don't think it is recommended to go 2.5" up front on the 5100s on the stock springs.

I read your writeup and your truck looks great! But you lost over a mpg just by raising the front 1.75? Or do you think some of that loss is because of your bigger tires? Also how did you put on 4 bilsteins 5100's for ~ $500? The best price I could find all 4 shocks are about $335 and the install and alignment another 370-450.....or did you install them yourself? And btw, I measured and I have 20.5 inches in front and 22.25 inches in the back, center hubcap to fender. I have 2012 DC SB Sport, stock tires and wheels. Also, I checked and have 4 leafs in the rear. (3 curved and 1 straight)

The mileage decrease is probably 99% due to the larger tires/wider rims. The slight increase in height may have caused a little more wind resistance.

Install price, my Dad and I installed the rear, because those are extremely easy & safe to install. I had the fronts installed and alignment for about $200.

If I were you, I would just have Four Wheel install them or tell your mechanic to match their price. I know many people have a love/hate relationship with Four WHeel Parts, but they install 5100s all the time and probably have much more experience with adjustable shocks than your average mechanic.

    Good Luck

To try and answer the original question... Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the 4 5100's, get eibach springs (1.6" lift) for the front, then take the front shocks (@ 0") and springs to a mechanic to get them assembled for like $40, and then bolt the assembled coilovers on yourself along with the back shocks? You would still probably want to take it in for an alignment I suppose. I guess this method assumes that the cost of the extra eibach springs + mechanic coilover assembly is cheaper than the labor for the mechanic to install the 4 shocks with your stock springs.

Probably comes out close to the same, but you end up with new springs on the front and arguably a better ride. Maybe someone else has an opinion on this...

    *UPDATE

I thought I would post a pic of my results for those who might find this thread in the future. 2012 Tacoma Sport Package, 2wd, DC SB. 4 Bilsteins 5100's replacing the OEM shocks. Fronts are set to 1.75 on stock coils. Wheels and Tires are also stock, for now. Sits perfectly level and the ride is great, very happy with results. Thanks to all who replied especially primo 95.

nice glad I ran across this thread!...notice any MPG change since the install?...When I put on my new wheels I have noticed a difference and not sure if I want to make it any worse by taking it up some.

If you put bigger tires on it will affect the mileage you put on the odometer. I went up one size to 265/70 17s and it affected my mileage about 4%. When adjusting for that there was no effect on my MPG with bigger tires and the front lifted.
