After reading the clear directions in this forum, I finally decided to make the mod on my 2012. I didn't want to go through a winter and then get stuck because I didn't make this simple mod. However, I also hoped I wouldn't have to try to explain to my wife how I screwed up a new truck cutting wires!

VERY carefully, I removed the glove box, checked the forum pictures and looked at the wiring. I unhooked the battery, and decided the simplest thing to do was clip the wire a few inches from the plug and cover the tips. I checked to be sure I had the correct wire twice before the clip. Put things back together, hooked the battery, started up and went to 4wd Low. Sure enough, everything seems to work, now have the light in 4L but no beeping.

Now I just have to wait for a couple feet of snow on the road to try this out!

I did it on my 2013. No problems. Dont forget to undo the battery (i know some of you dont) but i got a check engine light that wouldnt go away when i did mine. I unplugged the battery, pumped the brakes (to drain any power left) and plugged it back in with no more problems!! woot! Now i have to wait to try it!

Some traction control (limited slip) is far better than none.. and as the videos show, there is tire spin before TRAC transfers power to the traction (non-spinning) tire. A-TRAC stops the spin much sooner, but for the non-ATRAC Toyotas, this is an excellent mod for Low Range!

I think lo-trac works better when you don't give it full throttle. There's no intake manifold vacuum at full throttle, so the brake booster doesn't have power. (ATRAC-equipped vehicles use an electric pressure pump instead of a vacuum booster.)

I made it up some ugly slopes today in 4-Lo and this mod was the only thing that made it possible at all. I couldn't pull them in 4-Hi without smoking my clutch so had to use low. Since it was in deep snow, I also had to run between 4500 and 5000 RPM to even begin to keep moving. I would definitely have liked to not rev it so high, but it was that or back down.

    Hi Guys,

wondering if you could help me out as I'm a total N00b to the 2nd Gen Scene. I just bought a 2006 2.7 5 speed 4x4 AC SR5. Will this mod work for me? I have no idea if I have Trac or not... Sorry if this question has been beat to death..

If it does work, my second question is. My ABS/Emergency brake light is on, and I haven't diagnosed the problem yet. Will Trac still work if these maint. lights are on?

    Thanks!

there was VSC/TRAC on 05-08, but it was a very rare option.

I had the same experience. Had to use very high RPM and was bucking like crazy. What are the options when everything is bumping and shaking so violently besides backing down? I have a few very steep slopes and curves to navigate in 8 to 12 inches no path. Only way to make it was press on but man I was afraid I was going to drop the rear end or tranny. Next time I'll try starting out on 4-Low 2nd or 3rd but I dunno. W/O the mod no way I agree cause 4 Hi wasn't getting it done.

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
So, if I undertsand correctly, you can't do the ABS kill switch and the YWM mod?

Is it only one or the other, or you can't run them simultaneously or what?

I was planning on doing this ABS mod:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...easy-caveman-can-do-abs-disable-mod-pics.html

My little brain can't comprehend why they wouldn't be able to function side by side together.

I have a '11 Sport. I would think I could have the YWM and ABS killed in 2H & 4H and transition to 4LO with no change. :notsure:

It's late and my eyes hurt from reading 50+ pages on my shitty phone.

Our trucks don't have a "mechanical" limited slip differential. They use computer controlled braking to brake the wheel that's spinning and shoot some juice to the one that's not. In 4HI we have brake controlled LSD. In 4Low we have nothing. Open dif. We do YWM so we can have that brake controlled LSD in 4Low. Soooo doing YWM and then activating ABS kill sw basically puts it back to factory conditions in 4 Low.

I am not done with this as I too would like to have ABS off and YWM functional. There must be a way, but so far no.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. That makes sense mechanically/electronically.

I wouldn't be as concerned about having ABS kick-in in 4LO esp. since it is needed to make TRAC function, but it would be nice to kill-it in 2HI & 4HI.

I am still going to attempt both mods tonight, but if I have to choose one over the other, it's gonna be YWM for sure.

    *UPDATE*

So I successfully did the ABS kill mod, and the Yellow-Wire mod.

Thanks to Milowilli for pointing me in the right direction for the ABS kill on a Non-Off-Road VSC enabled Tacoma. Cut the Light Green (same spot as the Blue w/ Yellow Trace) wire, and connect it to a SPST On-Off switch. No grounding necessary EASY!!!

I took some pics, and will incorporate a more detailed description in the thread I started while I was researching how to do both mods (ABS Kill / YWM).

I have to say, it's nice being able to kill the ABS when it's icy out, and I'm sure it will be useful when off-road. We've had freezing fog in the PNW for the last couple days, with temps below freezing. I tested it out on the way to work this morning and I feel a lot safer being able to stop on my own without a computer controlling my brakes.

Many thanks to all of you guys that pioneered this mod.

Did it today. Soldered a rocker switch in and left it hanging behind the glove box just in case I have to take it in for warranty service sometime. I figured why not? I don't want any problems with the dealer.

well today i changed the rear/front diff oil as well as the transfer case oil.while letting the stuff drain(which was pretty clean for 75k)i disconnected the battery and cut the wire.when i started the truck it stalled and i thought piss, started it up again and no problems,i hadda go test it.i went to the steepest hill i have climbed to date, about half way up i started to spin, the diffs started doing their thing and i crept forward then stuck again.held my position with the brake and gave it some gas, letting out the brake, started spinning from wheel to wheel but made it another 2 foot then stupped again.did the brake release with some more throttle and away i went up and over the top, probably coulda went at that pace for another 25 yards lol.love the mod folks,i will video the hill when the sun is upo som, etime
