Edit to ADD: I Goofed on the title... it's a 2006.

So I've had this issue before that was resolved by following a thread here earlier. It was in fact the STOP 10A fuse that blew. Fast forward to today and I have no clue what the deal is.

    Solutions I've tried so far

Checked all the fuses, multiple times including:

    10A IG1
    7.5 A ACC
    10A STOP
    10A IG1 No.2

I've tried pressing the button next to the shifter with zero results.

I don't have an owner's manual, but will get one very soon, so I do not have anything else to go on besides reading problems people had in the past. At the moment I'm stuck at work trying to find a switch somewhere by the pedal....

Additional note. I do have an aftermarket tow package.

If the button isn't working it seems that the shifter linkage is frozen or binding.

I have not tried rocking the truck yet. As far as the button pressing, I always have the key in the slot and the truck is turned on and running when I attempt the button push.

    Edit: Tried the rocking....nothing :-(

I found this thread, but there was no solution posted :-(

yeah the tab is lifted and the button is exposed.

Side Note... If I push really hard it goes into gear BUT there is a very loud thud.

What were you doing in a park?? Pretty sure those are only for walkers. .:D

    Had to.

Do you hear anything underneath when you try to shift? Well have someone else shift.

Thank you guys so much for the input. I applied brute force to get the Tacoma in Drive and noticed a thud coming from the shifter area. I was able to drive the truck the whole way home without a problem.

So my line of thinking right now is that there is something blocking the shifter from making the transition from park. Evidence so far supports that; No blown fuses, No slippage in transmission and I hear a faint click in the shifter area when brake is applied - so that must mean something is disengaging.

So I followed the awesome tutorial here: Center Console Removal

Here is a pic from the shifter area. Note: The flash made it look disgusting...sorry. But it does look like some rubbing is occurring when the shifter is being engaged.

Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Run over anything? check the linkage to the tranny? When my 06 wouldnt shift out of park it was the brake switch but pressing the button got me out of park.

Everything right now points to Shift Interlock Solenoid. I'm currently trying to find whats involved with it's replacement.

sounds like the solenoid wasn't working and then you finished it off with a bang.

So I've been calling around and shops want $300+ for the shift interlock solenoid part :-( The guy did say if the override doesn't work then there's another culprit. Of all the places I called everybody seemed surprised it was a "possible" solenoid because they never EVER had to replace one.

I have a brake light switch on order for pickup tomorrow...

When you pressed the brake and heard the click, the click was the solenoid unlocking the shifter. IMO that takes the solenoid and the brake switch out of it.

Woke up this morning and it was working fine. I'm gonna make a trip to the junkyard soon and get myself a different shifter unit.
