Swi-jack 09 tacoma help

i bought the

$46 Swi-jack Steering Wheel Control Module Designed for Clarion, Kenwood, Alpine, JVC and Blaupunkt

Swi-jack steering wheel remote adapter. and i fallowed the instructions i connected the red to +12 switched, black to ground, pin 6 to ground, pin 7 to white, pin 8 to resistor white and blue yellow to blue/yellow on my HU. i have a Kenwood kvt-819dvd. i can get the swi jack powered on and setup for version 8 as per the instructions. i have the dial thing set to 3 as per the instructions. i am to the point were i amd ready to program the steering wheel buttons. the instructions say to ture on the vehical and press and hold the programing button. well the button lights but then goes out.

i wait untill the unit flashes 8 times after i turn on the power then i press the program button. but the light never stays on or does any thing when i press the steering wheel buttons.

can someone help me?

 

Check out this link below. I was on a thread trying to figure out an issue similar to this. It was a grounding issue on pin 6 in the end... yours might be the same. Not sure. Read this over and see if it helps.

That’s was one of my issues I didn’t connect pin 6 to ground and I used wire taps first they didn't puncture the wire. But I stripped the wire sheathing off and spliced the wires. And I checked it all with a volt meter and all the wires are making a connection. the only thing I can think of is it might be a timing thing or I read under the trouble shooting section in the swi manual it could be a issue with the resistor. The control wires might have a different voltage or resistant. Or the unit is defective. I’m hoping its just the timing.

 

Wait, I'm confused on your connections here. Did you connect the 150 ohm resistor from pin 8 to the white wire from the PAC unit (which should already be connected to pin 7)??

Where did you get information to connect blue/yellow to blue/yellow on your HU?

 

yes pin 8 is connected to the white wire by way of the 150 ohm resistor. pin 7 is connected stright to the white wire.

i have a kenwood stereo so i don't use the headphone plug i use the blue/yellow wire so i can control the HU with the steering wheel remote the remote wire i connect it to on my HU is also colored blue/yellow. the instructions say for kenwood stereos connect the blue/yellow wire to the HU remote control wire.

 

Ah. Ok, I see now. I have a Pioneer, and mine uses the connector plug. So, after you turn on the power and you get the 8 blinks, do you hold the program button down until the light comes on? Its at this point, you should be able to start programming.

 

yep thats were i'm at. but the button programing doesnt seem to be working. or i'm just not holding the button long enough. ive tried pressing the programing button then pressing the vol up and then the light goes out but doesn't come back on.

 

Yeah, it doesn't seem like you held the button long enough, but I'm not positive. When I programmed mine, I let the thing flash 8 times, then I held the programming button down until it came on and stayed on. At this point, it's in programming mode, but you only have 5 seconds to begin your first button (which is the up volume) or else it will end the programming and you have to start over.

 

Ok so this weekend I went out and tried messing with the

$46 swi-jack steering wheel control module designed for clarion, kenwood, alpine, JVC and blaupunkt

swi-jack again. I turned the truck on got the 8 led flashes then pressed and held the program button. The light came on and I let go and immediately pressed the volume up on the steering wheel. The light went off and never came back on. I looked in the manual at the trouble shooting section. And there’s a part for this type of problem happening specifically with version 8 and a few other versions. It said to remove the resistor and then try. I was a little confused with this because I didn't want to risk frying the unit. So I read on down the issue and it has another part that says disconnect the white wire interface all together and then press the program button and see if the light stays on. If it does it says to go to a page on Pac audios web site and do something to figure out what resistor you need. And if the light doesn't stay on they say the unit is faulty and needs replaced.
So I detached both the wires that go to the white wire and tried it and the light did not stay on. So I’m guessing the unit gone bad.
I’m not really surprised. when I first hooked up the unit I miss read the pins and I had the white wire connected to pin 6 and the resistor connected to pin 7, didn't even know understand connecting ground to pin 6 at the time and had the wrong resistor connected for a while. I had also left it plugged in like this while I was running the factory HU during my Trouble shooting of installing my aftermarket HU. So I bet it got damaged. I ordered a new SWI-Jack so we will see if the new unit works when I get it in.

 

Hmmm... it is possible the unit got fried then. It's definately ground pin 6, white wire from PAC to pin 7, then connect the resistor between pin 7 and 8. Should be good to go after that. Good luck with the new one!

 

well i got in my new

SWI-Jack pluged it in and and got it all hooked up. it worked like a charm. the programing was a breeze. so i guess the first SWI-Jack i had was bad. i just pluged the new one in the the old ones wires. i programed all the buttons even the hands free phone buttons for the stereo use of course. since my aftermarket HU doesn have the hands free funtion installed.

the only things is the steering wheel buttons don't respond as fast as they did with the factory unit. you have to hold then down for a split second before they react. a quick press will not work. and the other thing that was interesting. i programed the hands free voice button for seek up and if i press it it turns the volume down. it could just be my HU or the manual has the mute program in the wronge order. oh well i don't really see my self using any thing but volume, mode, track, and disk change any way.


my word of advice to any one that installes the SWI-Jack is. make sure you use the correct resistor (tacomas 150ohm) and make sure you connect the wires to the right pins before pluging in the unit. ground to ground, ground to pin 6, white to pin 7, resistor to pin 8, power to power. and make sure to put the SWI-Jack unit in a comfortable easily accessed place (i put mine behind the glove box to the left side ledge. and i found its easiler to program if you take the cover off the SWI unit.

I am kind of confusing to do the terminmation...... Help!!!

 

Check out my post at the top of this thread on 6/24/09... I have a link to another thread that had lots of helpful troubleshooting. The attached picture here is also in that link. I believe the white wire you are asking about is shown in the pic... it is attached with the blue connector just above my index finger to pin 7, the purple/white wire.

 

i have this same set up but havent had any luck on the install, the instructions suck. also not sure which resistor to use, none of them are labeled-need help!

One very important thing to note. When you're done wiring and programming the module you MUST put the selector switch on the number that is associated with you new HU... otherwise it won't work.

Alpine = 1
JVC = 2
Kenwood = 3
Clarion = 4
Valor = 5
OEM = 6
Blaupunkt = 7
