I've been needing to put a CB in my truck since I got it. But money has been tight and I've been looking at where to mount a CB. I almost bought a Midland 75-822 but figure that radio is a bit over budget for what I'll be using. and small handheld radios have small speakers that don't sound great from my experiences. So I'm most likely going to get the Uniden 520. Very compact and simple, gets the job done. My goal is to mount it overhead between the rearview mirror and headliner. However I have the overhead compass and eyeglass storage bin w/lights. I measured it, still have enough room vertically between; 2" only need about 1-3/8" to 1.5". My question is has anyone mounted a radio overhead on a '05+ taco? I found one website that did it to a FJ cruiser that had no overhead console. and the FJ seems to have much more head room. I've done something like this before in a early 90's 4runner with a sunroof. I never saw anyone do it, but I figured out a nice way to do it by building a custom bracket. I also like overhead CB's b/c the speaker is firing down near your ears. Does anyone have pics of removing the overhead CB? like what's behind the there?

Most of the time I rather not leave aftermarket electronics in the visible region, but this is a cheapie radio, that is black with no chrome. So hopefully nobody feels the need to break in for a $30 radio. But with tinted windows hopefully they won't see it being it has no chrome and I'll keep the Mic in the console when not in use.

As for the antenna I'm on the fence between the Little Wilson mag mount and a 4' wilson mounted on the bedrail. One will yield better radiation patterns and most likely better performance, but the other will withstand tree limbs off-road.

I just switched from a 3 ft firestick mounted on the bed rail to a little wilson mag mounted on the roof. Reception and transmission are both way better than before.

I went from 1 mile to about 3 or 4 miles now.

Bingo. Someone has done it. The radio he used is slightly larger than the one I'm looking at, and I don't think I'll need to 2x speakers or whatever. Actually... Looks like having the Overhead console might make this an easier job by providing a access panel to the work area!! SWEET. Now I have 3 antenna options. Fab a CB antenna 3'-4' to fit in the factory location on the RF fender, little wilson mag or 4' on the bed rail. Out of those 3 options the little wilson "should" perform the best b/c it's 100% over the roof line, centered and tallest. But a limb will knock it right off.
