I'd say depends on your interest. Around the Memphis area if you're into dry rub BBQ Charlie Vergos rendezvous is decent. There's Beal street with some decent blues music...pretty much a tourist trap and don't go after 10pm. Also have Tunica just south of Memphis but, it's tiny compared to LAS. Oak city I did the Oklahoma City Bomb Memorial and Brick Town couple decent places for good steak & decent music like Toby Keith's Bar. I also visited Canyon Texas south of Amarillo....there's a good size canyon, Paliduro Canyon (spelled wrong I'm sure).

The Trans America trail can be taken in little pieces, most of them are fairly mild - just not paved. I wasn't suggesting that you drive the entire distance, but a review of the trail would probably provide you w/ a few select places where you could pull off the highway and get a little dirt under your wheels along the way.

For example, the Tenessee TAT maps can be purchased for $42, this provides you with 11 maps covering 403 miles:

    Edit:

Here are the Shadow of the Rockies Maps, including Texas/NM:

From what i can find online it seems like the TAT is just for morocyles...is there any truth behind this?

No. The guy that put it all together and is selling maps is a hardcore dual sport rider, but it can be done in a competent 4wd.

Nearly 5,000 miles start to finish. It is broken down into ~200mile trips w/ gas stops and hotels. You can jump in / out where you choose.

Just a heads up that 40 West of Asheville to the Tn. border can be very foggy and deadly at times, especially through the Gorge. If it is slow down, way down, and it doesn't hurt to put on your flashers and headlights if it is.

Welcome back, drive safe and enjoy your trip home.

The memorial here in OKC is a good place to visit as well as brick town, both are walking distance from each other. Hit me up when you pass through and we can grab a bite to eat.

Just to reinforce his advice...the fog is no joke. If it's bad, please consider pulling off and laying up somewhere until it clears up.

A quick Google of "Great Smokey Mountains fog vehicle accidents" yielded this right away: http://www.tennesseeinjuryattorneyblog.com/2013/05/deadly-car-accidents-precipita.html

It would be wrong to return from deployment and get messed up driving home to your folks. Stay Safe Marine!
