285 tires cause computer to lock up wheels in turns?

    Hey y'all,

I apologize if there are discussions already on this topic. Haven't been able to find any searching around. If there are, I'd love to read them.

Here's the problem I'm having with my 2010 Tacoma 4x4: after lifting my truck, I upgraded from the stock BFG 265 Rugged Terrains to BFG 285 A-Ts. This immediately caused problems with UCA rub, which I solved first with wheel spacers, and more recently with new wheels and Camburg uni-ball UCAs. I have plenty of clearance everywhere now, nothing is rubbing.

The problem occurs on paved mountain roads, going around sweepers at a good speed (not wreckless, but not granny-slow either) - the wheels suddenly lock up, the pedal feels sticky (like when you hit ice), and the traction control alert (I think) starts beeping. It happens for a second, causing me to swerve, and then I re-gain control.

I ran in to another guy at the local 4WP store with a 2013 Tacoma who has been having the same problem. The employee at 4WP said they've heard about this happening on the newer lifted Tacomas, and they think it's the larger tire size that's confusing the computer, causing it to think one of the tires is losing traction in those corners and therefore engaging the traction control system.

So, I took the truck in to the dealership and they re-calibrated the ABS system, saying that sometimes after lifting a truck the ABS system can get messed up. That was the only possible solution they could think of. EDIT: the employee who told me this was misinformed - turns out the techs actually did a VSC zero point calibration.

Unfortunately, I've now had the same problem occur since they re-calibrated it. I'm wondering if other people out there with newer Tacomas are having similar issues, or if anyone has any advice. Even though it doesn't happen often, I feel this is really dangerous, because when it locks up I lose control for a second. If that were to happen in the wrong scenario, it could be really bad. I'm honestly to the point where I almost want to trade in my 285s and go back down to 265s just so I don't have to worry about it anymore. It seems ridiculous to not be able to roll 285s when you have more than enough clearance. I also know there are tons of people out there with 285s who never have this problem, which makes it even more frustrating.

Sorry this is so wordy - only way I know how to explain it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Its your VSC. I have removed my number 1 ABS fuse and have never looked back. But i do miss my limited slip. Some have had luck with it being re-calibrated but not me.

Maybe but i really dont care anymore. I hated the ABS and VSC anyways. it was also a pain to remind and explain to people to turn it off when they would drive it. I have the gauges blacked out so i dont have any of the lights on the dash.

I've had the VSC beep when I'm turning 90 degrees around a sharp corner. I hear the triple beep, but by the time I look I can't see the light as it has gone out. Also have 285's. I have not had it happen at higher speeds, but maybe I drive too slow. Just so you know you're not the only one.

    Too few to list.
VSC turned "off" is not completely off. It's always lurking and will kick back on when it senses that the yaw is great. Best thing is to get your vsc re-calibrated then install an on and off switch. It's cheaper to get a switch.

It's all pretty much been covered

but , get an alignment , then do VSC zero point recalibration

If that doesn't work , ABS bypass mod

Mine started doing it at stock height after going up to 265/70/17 MT's and getting the tranny TSB reflash done

take it on a mountain road and go around a few sweepers with some speed and you'll soon see if it's an issue for you or not

never heard of it either, but that's what the dealership told me they did!

Edit: I called the dealership, turns out the service employee was misinformed as to what the techs actually did. You guys are right, there is no such thing as re-calibrating the ABS. What they did was in fact a zero point calibration. The good news is that they did it for free.

For now I'll try turning the VSC off and if it still gives me problems I'll do the ABS kill switch. May do that either way actually.

I had same issue with 285's on 3" lift. Tried turning off by holding button but it lurked in the background and would come on anyway. Did the abs kill switch mod and no problems. Didn't try to re calibrate but didn't want to fork money over to dealer just to find out it didn't work. Good luck because its a scary thing for sure when it kicks in.

These problems are why I went with the Baja suspension for the upgrade over stock. I can throw this truck into anything and it behaves just fine with no nannies kicking in . . . . .

Dude, this has caused so many spontaneous explosions of swearing you don't even know. You just have to learn to take it slow like a grandma or always do the double tap car squiggly symbol to turn off that shit.
