Buying a block heater. Yes, I know, "but Alex it's only New England, not the Arctic!" I know.

I prefer to plug the truck in than remote start it because it uses a bit of gas.

But the thought of plugging in the block heater have me an idea. If I was to get a deep cycle battery for a secondary battery, could I wire the block heater to a switch to the secondary battery? It's a 400w heater and I believe it pulls 15a.

Could probably wire in a timer to kick it on after an hour (3-way switch. On. Off. On with timer)

Let me know what you guys think! I'm excited to have heat a minute after starting the truck in cold weather.

    I thought you were broke?

The cost of the little extra gas you burn idling for 10 minutes will not offset the cost of the block heater anytime soon. Even with a block heater, it's still a cold start for the engine, it doesn't keep the engine at operating temperature so don't expect heat the second you start it.

There's no reason you couldn't run a block heater off of a deep cycle battery but I wouldn't do it if it were me. As I said above, it's still a cold start for the engine and deep cycle batteries aren't great starting batteries the way it is. Last thing I'd want to do is put a large electrical draw on the battery right before you task it with a cold start. If the battery doesn't have the juice to start the engine, you get no heat.

Save your money and be happy you even have remote start!

I agree although what I saw this morning with the Tundra was pretty bad. I couldn't believe how much that bed was shaking around!

    X2.
The tiny amount of gas that you burn on a 10 minute idle will likely NEVER offset the cost of a block heater, a deep cycle battery, and a power inverter. Not to mention the cost of the wiring and various switches to install the damn thing.

yeah, I like it because it fits into stock bumper and yet by replacing the whole lower valence, offers some additional protection between the furthest forward part of the truck and where an IFS skid begins. He's got some pretty slick looking options for the FJ. I think the early 2nd gen Taco version that he started will turn out similar to the FJ, but I'm curious to see what he does for the 11+ when the lower valence changed to have angled ends.

So glad that winter gas is here...who needs 19.5mpg when you can get 17.4mpg...oof...90 miles of driving and my tank is already at 1/4 and I am intentionally driving with an egg on the pedal to be sure I'm not insane...

I PMed Benson to see if he still likes it. I like the idea of less weight with the alum than the steel

I'm down between 17 and 18 because of the winter gas and the extra weight in the bed (I threw some tractor weights in the bed this year).

I've dropped from about 20-21 to 17-18 between the winter gas and adding my sliders/skids...

I'm down around 17, but that's because snowy parking lots and access roads give me a lead foot:D
They didn't plow the parking lot or access road at work after the last two storms, so we've got about an inch of well-glazed iciness on for the last 1/2 mile to the office. So it's play time every morning and evening right now, and it's put a pretty significant dent in my mileage. After this weekend when they come through and plow, sand, and salt I should be back up around the 18-19 that I was averaging before it snowed.
I know what you mean, though. I miss the high-21's/low 22's I was averaging this summer.
