Thanks for the beta, however I'm a noob to off roading and not too confident on rocky trails. I'm all about big mountain and big meadow scenery and lakes- my dog loves swimming in them- so I'm not sure if I can handle your rocky MT trails! If you can recommend anything more subtle in the easy/moderate category that would be great. Finally got some armor and a lift on the truck but no winch or front bumper yet... Thanks for the help. Hope to hit up your local trails in July or August.

 

I can assure you your truck can do the trails easily. We will help you learn how to handle the truck over the stuff

Lolo and magruder are highways pretty much. Maintained roads and easy to make good time on.

Dasiy and lulu pass are the same. But goose and Morrison have a few bumps. But nothing you can't handle we will help you. I assure you you won't break anything and if you happen too, ill fix it.

Those photos are awe inspiring! However the photos I've seen of the switchbacks up morrisson (and the vid from the overland guys) give me a cold sweat... I did read that MTgirl lead up group from the less intense side. Perhaps I will have the experience to handle the alternate route. Thanks for the suggestion guys! Hopefully I can inspire a small trip to happen

 

If Morrison is on the list this summer then I'm definitely doing the switchbacks this time. Baby taco and I will hang at the bottom slaying some trout first though!

 

These pics are awesome and making me regret getting getting rid of my Gen 1 Taco just for little fun trips like this. I'm itching to see this trip become an annual thing and hope to join next year. I'm curious what the biggest truck going up that set of Morrison switchbacks was, could a Gen2 DC make it up there or is it really asking for the shorter wheelbase?

 

The overland expo guys did morrison with a trainer attached to one of their rigs so that tells you something there. Tho it did take them all day to do it.

The three rigs that did it as part of the Epic were 1st gen xcabs and it took them ~2 hours to do the 24 switchbacks.

Your 2nd gen is both wider and longer. Your truck info is not clear if you are a long bed or a short bed. If you are a long bed, your wheelbase is significantly longer than the 1st gens who did the trail. This will impact how you get around the hairpin turns. As you can see from the pictures, even they, being shorter and narrower, had a little trouble on a couple of the turns because of their wheelbase length.

 

Thanks, yes the trouble that the smaller trucks had made me think that the 2nd Gen DC would likely not make it. Mine is a shortbed (the only bed size you can get with a TRD Off Road) but its still longer than all of those 1st Gen trucks. The fact that only 3 trucks went up those switchbacks is more comforting as I thought the whole crew made the trip and it was part of the journey (ie. unavoidable.)

If this isn't going to be a somewhat regular thing then I suppose I'll just have to look for some shorter local group outings to test my chops on anyway. I'll keep watching the Colorado threads for plans when they come up.

It would fit I think. We only had one corner give us trouble and won't again since I know how to do it.

But you don't have to do that part. Still can do goose and such.

 

Dude you'd have no issues at all. It's really not that bad. And so exciting.

Yeah, it shows my ignorance about 2nd gens. I didn't realize double cab TRD Offroad models only came with the 5' bed.

 

While inches do count sometimes, I think they are negligible 99% of the time and can be overcome the other 1% of the time. I am a whole 6" longer and wider than you and our turning radius is 4" off so we pretty much turn the exact same circle and what's an extra 4" on top of the 20 ft turning radius you have.

I haven't driven Morrison, but I can't imagine those extra inches will even be noticable in terms of how hard the trail is. If he were a DCLB then it might be another story though. haha They are 18" longer than you and have like 5 extra feet on the turning radius.

BTW didn't the land cruiser with the trailer need to use those Maxtrax ramp things to get the trailer over a large boulder on one of them? I guess I never realized the length and width differences between 1stG and 2ndG, and how that would account into turning radius. I don't know if I'd ever do Morrison without an ATV or a jeep. Even the guy on the motorbike seemed to have a hard time with traction. But the views are stunning!

 

Dude...we WALKED up that shit. They just blew it up all dramatic like and used the maxtrax useable was all for product plugging.

The black sand..yea..nobody had a problem.

You wouldn't need em. If anything just need to back up again a bit instead of once like the 1st gens.

It's way easier then it looks.
