I know some guys on here have done the 2WD to 4x4 conversion, but has anyone done an automatic to manual conversion? If so, how was it? Was it hard? Was it worth it?

    Started automatic. Swapped to manual
Yeah I just did swap. Had 2.7 5 speed 95.5 4x4 reg cab rusted out. Bought 96 2.7 4x4 auto trans reg cab. Crappy engine. auto trans and manual have different gears. I went from 358 to 456! It's a whole different truck. I think if you go to my profile you can trace my thread on swap. It's not all pro. It is a job well worth it.

There was a guy on TTORA that swapped a manual into his double cab prerunner. He didn't have a build about it but if you want to ask him question his username is DigitFiend. Good luck man I am planning on doing this in the future to my double cab.

So does anyone know if the transmission from the 2.7L is different from the trans on the 3.4L?

Manual or auto? The manuals are different. The auto I'm not sure...I believe they're both the a340 *I think*

I'd like to do this swap someday...

I do not have experience doing this, but on several car forums I have hung out on over the years, this topic comes up. The consensus has always been that it is hard to justify the time, cost and complexity of converting to a manual transmission from auto (or the reverse) compared to buying the vehicle with the transmission option you want. It has to be a labor of love, and very likely will not save any money over selling your current ride and buying a similar one with the transmission you want.

I figure that's the case. But since I plan on doing a conversion from 2WD to 4x4, i figured I might as well look into swapping to a 5-speed at the same time. I've considered selling my truck and buying another with the options I want, but I'd rather keep my current truck and continue building it the way I want it.

The reason this topic comes up is because the 1st gen double cabs were never available in manual trans, eliminating the option of selling and rebuying. I'm one of the many who contemplate the swap, though there are a few major factors to weigh as you've stated.

What he says. With all the computers running everything. Man you have to be looking at a lot more than just a trans swap.

From what I have read the swap is fairly straight forward as far as mechanical is concerned. However you will either need an ecu from a manual Tacoma or Repin your current ecu
