Does anyone have the drawing that shows how to remove the console in order to replace the light bulb that illuminates the gear letters on the console? For the shifter, the P (Park), R (Reverse)...etc.

It won't light up. I appreciate it. Written instructions or a drawing from the manual would be great if anyone has those handy.

    Thanks.

He's being a smartass by saying you should get a 5-speed.

As for replacing the bulb, I'd imagine it's the same steps to remove the console as it is for my 5-speed.

    Unscrew the shifter knob.

There are two screws at the front of the trim piece around your shifter and two screws at the rear. Lift up and forward at the same time. Underneath there you should be able to figure out how to change the bulb.

Honestly, I've never seen under an automatic so I have no idea.

I haven't tried this yet but it might work (post #2 by Fuzzyman81):

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st-gen-tacomas/118867-light-bulb-replacement-shift-console.html

I'm not sure if you can remove the plastic trim around the gear shift lever without removing the cup holders and armrest? If you do need to remove the cup holders and armrest, follow the link below (I did this when I replaced my cup holder tabs):

You can remove the shifter console without taking the cup holder/center console out. First take off the shifter knob, if you have 4wd.DSC01703_e60c3ff491f52ac78cce6d1e96da640a93ec003c.jpg Then undo the 4screws, 2 on each side.DSC01704_6de02ccb1d237be3ca944697f8c58d08111570d7.jpg
Lift up from the bottom of the console and pull the back end out.DSC01705_aa3ab00bb10f0affa111c4715c4eef5279552598.jpg
Then you can remove the console.DSC01706_6b3324b0ffda57ec384954bc492f1a477746b5fd.jpg
You should see the bulb, just twist it out.DSC01707_e51e1900bf79fc07cce67d8bc4a695aa84d3b2d4.jpg

Hey since we're on this subject... I have a 5spd and have my center console removed. So I just got the plastic attached below the shift knob. Anyways, after mytruck runs for a good while I got hot air coming into the cab from the gap right below the shifter. I'm thinking I must be missing some sorta boot or kind of insulation pieceto keep the air coming in. Can anyone snap some pics of ur manny shifter dissected like what camptaco did? So I can compare. Thanks!

It'd be easier to take a pic of your set up to see if you're missing anything.

You should have rubber boots under the fake leather shifter boots.

    Like these guys:

    Started automatic. Swapped to manual
There should be a solid metal plate with boots that mount to the truck body. The pleather assy goes over that.

My shifter light was out too. Or it would turn on and off whenever it felt like it, but was mostly off. One day, I took apart the console to try to fix my rattling shifter. After playing with the shifter a bit, I buttoned everything up. Suddenly, my shifter light always works now. Must have been a loose connection and I accidentally fixed īt.

Anybody see anything wrong that would be allowing all the hot air to enter the cab? I ended up taking it all apart as you can see in the pictures. and ended up leaving it without the pleather(like how Madjik Man has it). I screwed down the 4 metal plate crews really really tight to see if hopefully that fixes the issue.
